  • How to generate great ideas that everybody will envy you

If you want to have a successful career in today’s creative society, you must have a constant flow of great ideas. You must become an idea person with an execution-oriented mindset.

    • When a new problem appears, you must have the skills to come up with unique solutions and bring them to life.
    • At every step, you have to see the potential for how things could be improved.
    • Even more, from time to time you should “live in the future” and then help build what’s missing.

And you know what, achieving all that is actually pretty easy. Having great ideas is a personality characteristic that can be developed. If you become the right sort of person, you will have the right sort of hunches; you will get the right type of brilliant ideas that everybody will love.

The secret to becoming the right sort of person is by looking at the world slightly differently and having a bulletproof idea generation system.

In this blog post, you will learn exactly how to achieve that. You will learn things like:

    • How to do an identity shift if you think you can’t come up with greati ideas
    • The difference between organic and made-up ideas
    • What really makes ideas great
    • 20 creativity triggers
    • 30 techniques to use when you are brainstorming ideas
    • How to protect your ideas from idea murderers
    • Why changes are great opportunities to come up with great ideas
    • How to cherry-pick the best ideas
    • How to bring ideas to life as fast as possible

    A personal idea generation system

After spending time with hundreds of people who most often have the problem of having too many great ideas (entrepreneurs, innovators etc.), I noticed three main differences in their thinking that stand out from the rest of population.

Firstly, they see themselves as individuals who have great ideas. They know that doubt is the number one idea killer. Thus, instead of doubting their creativity, they just pay attention to every single idea they get.

Secondly, they look at the world slightly differently. They see problems as opportunities, people’s needs as something that should be satisfied, future as their mission to co-build and a potential something that needs to be brought to life. They focus their mind on solutions.

But most importantly, people who have many brilliant ideas always have some kind of a framework in their mind that helps them come up with great ideas – a system for generating and prioritizing ideas.

The thing is, they might not even be aware of it, but they always have it. It’s a certain type of mindset and process that they follow, even if they don’t really know it (because it’s part of who they are, their unconscious self).

You can only have two problems in your life – a lack of brilliant ideas or too many brilliant ideas. Which will be yours?

If we take a step back, a system is nothing but a set of rules and processes that you follow to get a predictable outcome. The output we want in our case are, of course, brilliant ideas.

The best way to achieve such a creative output is to follow a carefully orchestrated idea generation process. In practical terms that means the following:

    1. Identity shift – seeing yourself as a creative person with unique ideas
    2. Idea generation – the secrets of actually coming up with good ideas
    3. Creativity triggers – tricks that can open your mind and help improve ideas even further
    4. Idea prioritization – a valuation system for deciding which of the generated ideas are the best and have the most potential
    5. Development of ideas – a set of steps for developing ideas into feasible and tangible solutions that everybody will love and understand.

As you can see, coming up with good ideas is a process, not a one-time event. The goal of the first three phases of the process (1-3) is to generate as many ideas as possible. They are called the input ideas. The goal is to have many crazy, stupid, bad, random and unrealistic input ideas.

And the goal of the last two phases (4-5) is to select the best ideas. They are called the output ideas. At the end of the process, there should be a few new, different, brilliant, out-of-the-box and feasible ideas.

The best news is that after following the idea generation process a few times, your mind assimilates it and you follow it intuitively. It becomes a natural way how you think, you become an idea person.

Excited? Now let’s dive deep into each of these phases.

    How to generate great ideas

Identity shift – everybody can have outstanding ideas

You have 100 billion neurons in your brain. You are a product of billions of years of evolution. And then you think you aren’t a creative being? Don’t fool yourself.

Among your brain cells, creative juices are absolutely flowing. You are no exception. You just have to let it out on the surface. How? With the right system, of course.

But first, there is a big issue. If you don’t do an identity shift first, you will never ever come forth with your ideas – in business or personal life. You will sabotage yourself in every possible way instead. If you don’t see yourself as an idea person, you murder every single one of your (brilliant) ideas; even before you become aware of them.

If you don’t see yourself as an idea person, you still come up with great ideas – but you either instantly and intentionally forget them or you let them slowly die by doing nothing. What a brutal self-sabotage.

I’ve seen it hundreds of times in startup teams. There is always one person who is shy, doesn’t see themselves as creative, but you can see from a distance that there are ideas flowing in their brain. All you have to do is to encourage such a person to share their thoughts, and ideas start flowing. Be such encouragement to yourself.

But why don’t I see myself as an idea person?

There are many potential reasons why you don’t see yourself as an idea person.

Maybe your creativity was never encouraged, maybe somebody shamelessly laughed at one of your ideas when you were young, or maybe you are an unrealistic perfectionist who only sees “cancer cures” as ideas that are good enough.

Here are the most probable reasons why you don’t see yourself as an idea person:

    • You stifled your creative juice with doubt; but that only means a flow of ideas is boiling under the hood
    • You are afraid of being rejected; but being rejected usually drives you to be even more creative
    • Nobody asked you about your ideas; but it’s your duty to be proactive and come forth with ideas
    • You have an unrealistic view on great ideas; they aren’t really rocket science ideas
    • You never really put an effort into systematically generating ideas; build yourself a system

Whatever your reason is, stop it. Everybody can be creative. Everybody can have brilliant ideas. So, close your eyes, imagine life is only a dream, and see yourself as the most creative person alive. Don’t doubt yourself for a second.

When your mind tries to serve you all the lies why you might not be an idea person, use the thought-stopping tool. Just say to your mind: shut up, I am the most creative person alive. Period.

Only doing the identity shift is far from enough to have brilliant ideas; but it’s a necessary start if you want to come up with them at all.

Thus, consciously decide that you will kick yourself out of the comfort zone and leverage creative juice that flows between your brain cells to advance your career and live a more creative fulfilling life.

    Idea generation

Idea generation phase – the secrets that will help you generate thousands of brilliant ideas

There are two general ways to come up with great ideas – you either notice an idea or you deliberately come up with it.

To notice great ideas (the so-called organic ideas), you have to start paying attention to what is happening in your environment. You have to pay attention to problems, needs and challenges.

To deliberately come up with good ideas (the so-called made-up ideas), you need the self-discipline to sit down and brainstorm. You need to know a few good creative tricks that will ignite your creative mind; and you have to do it often enough to make sure your creative juice stays fresh.

Combine both ways and you will become a living idea generation machine.

Organic ideas – Start noticing ideas based on observing what is happening around you

The most often way how ideas are born is the organic way. You notice, not think of, an idea. You notice that something is missing. But next second after you notice an idea, there is a big risk of forgetting it.

The solution for that is very simple. Always have a place to write down your ideas when you notice that something is missing in this world. A physical notepad. An app. Your hand. Wherever.

Just don’t be lazy, and write down every single idea that comes up to your mind during the day. The most brilliant ideas are usually noticed, not deliberately brainstormed! You observe something, see something missing and spontaneously get an idea.

Basically that means you have to do almost nothing to come up with brilliant ideas. You just have to be a little bit more observant of your environment, mindful of your thoughts, and disciplined enough to write down ideas that you get during the day.

Start with the goal of noticing five ideas during the day. Every single day for a month, write down at least five ideas that spontaneously come to your mind.

Pay attention to your thoughts and ideas that randomly come up, from the moment you sit on the toilet, take a shower and prepare yourself a breakfast, during the time when you work hard at your job, to the point when you come home to relax and read before sleep.

Start writing them down. That’s how you’ll rewire your brain to always pay attention to great ideas.

Besides observing everyday situations, be especially attentive to what goes through your mind during the times when the diffused mode of thinking is active. These are situations like:

    • Under the shower
    • Taking a walk, going for a jog or any kind of physical exercise
    • Driving, cooking
    • Finding yourself in new environments
    • Playing (with kids, games etc.)
    • Thinking about two different topics at the same time

What extensively helps in coming up with great organic ideas is having some kind of domain expertise or even several of them. An idea must be a match for your skills. Knowledge is what really powers brilliant organic ideas.

Consequently, to have good ideas read a lot, develop new competences, become an expert in a certain industry, constantly be curious and study how different things work. Develop T-shaped skills and organic ideas will start to flow in abundance.

    Think outside the box

Made-up ideas: Search for triggers that push you into the brainstorming phase

The second way to get to good ideas is to sit down and think of ideas. This way is much harder. You need a lot of discipline. You have to sit down and brainstorm a lot. You need to brainstorm hundreds of shitty ideas to get a few good ones.

That means one of the best exercises you can do to become an idea person is to brainstorm ideas every day. Timebox 30 minutes on a daily basis for brainstorming, take a piece of paper and a pen, and brainstorm at least 100 ideas.

Every single day. After a month, you will become an endless fountain of creative ideas. You will rewire yourself to squeeze out every single drop of the creative juice you possess. Do it as a 30-day challenge and your life will never be the same.

If brainstorming every day takes too much discipline…

Few people who are motivated and disciplined enough to brainstorm ideas every day. That means we need a better solution and it lies in the 3R formula of how habits are formed.

Every habit starts with a reminder (a cue), which triggers a certain type of behavior. In other words, after the triggers fires you do a specific routine – the habit itself. And in the end, you enjoy the reward, the benefit you gain from performing the habit. Reminder, routine, reward.

We already know the routine that you want to perform. You want to sit down and brainstorm ideas. The rewards are also pretty obvious. You want to advance in your career, become more productive, be appreciated for your brilliance, help the company to grow, or make more money.

Triggers are the ones that can really help you become more disciplined with brainstorming. What you need is a list of triggers that automatically push you into the brainstorming mode. Let me give you a few examples that I use in my own life:

    • Whenever I encounter a problem, I sit down and brainstorm ideas
    • Whenever I am alone and bored, I take a piece of paper and start brainstorming ideas
    • Whenever someone beats me in a competition, I start brainstorming ideas for how I can improve
    • Whenever I get rejected, I transform sorrows into brilliant ideas on how to become even more awesome
    • Whenever I hear someone complaining about something, I brainstorm potential solutions
    • When I travel to a new country, I always write down at least 10 new ideas
    • After I finish a book, I always brainstorm ideas on how to build new content on the shoulders of giants
    • After watching an inspiring movie, I sit down and brainstorm a few ideas

Think of 3 – 5 situations that could be your potential natural brainstorming triggers. It must be something that happens in your life at just the right frequency (a few times per week at the most), gets your creative juice flowing (usually strong emotional states), and directs your brainstorming to practical solutions.

That’s the secret to having awesome made-up ideas.

When you deliberately brainstorm to make up ideas, there is one more big psychological challenge you have to overcome. What happens is that when you brainstorm ideas, most of the ideas are crap and that is hard to accept.

But among those hundreds of crappy ideas are real gems that can change your life forever. That means there is a price to pay for digging yourself through the best possible ideas. The price is dirt thrown at your ego. You can see the dirt as a gatekeeper, because only the most persistent and bold individuals deserve to have the best ideas.

You must deserve everything worthwhile in life; even brilliant ideas.

    What really are great ideas?

To end this chapter properly, if you ever wondered what great ideas really are, know that they are nothing but:

    1. Solutions to problems; so whenever you encounter a problem, start thinking about ideas.
    2. Fulfillments of needs; so pay attention to what people want and desire.
    3. Creations that arouse certain feelings; so think about how you want to make people feel.

That means the best way to come up with good ideas is to be curious (ask questions), observe, and pay attention to people’s problems, needs and feelings. Listen and look around, and ideas will start flowing.

Creativity triggers – secrets that will help you make your ideas twice as good

Much like you can have triggers to lead you directly into the brainstorming mode, in the same way you can help yourself with triggers that spark your creativity even further by keeping your mind open.

And at the same time, you have to avoid different kinds of idea killers, since they have the opposite effect from what you want. That’s how ideas are improved.

The most common creativity triggers are:

    1. Reverse assumptions – How would the opposite look? What if I did the opposite?
    2. Playing with attributes – What different materials can be used, can I make it smaller, cheaper, etc.
    3. The skyscraper technique – How would a 100-times better solution look like?
    4. Traveling into the future – How will the world look like in 10, 50 or 100 years and how will the problem be solved?
    5. Convergences – How can I merge two or more things into one?
    6. Knowledge transfer – How could a solution from one industry be used in another industry? That means you should read books completely outside from your domain from time to time.
    7. Curiosity – Ask thousands of questions why things are as they are.
    8. Modeling – What would [your role model] do? How would [Einstein] think?
    9. Competition research and clever copying – You know, to make existing ideas even better ideas.
    10. Debating and listening to other people – What problems and needs do people really have?
    11. Rejections and conflicts – Rejections can always spark creativity if you know how to direct negative feelings into new ideas for improvements.
    12. Validated learning – Fail, make mistakes and learn from them. Ideas will start flowing.
    13. Changing surroundings – When you change the environment you trigger new thoughts.
    14. Using different creative techniques – Brainstorming, reverse brainstorming, brainwriting, six thinking hats, random words, story board, mind maps, SCAMPER etc. More about that later.
    15. All kinds of art – Music, movies, paintings, digital art, inspirational sites, …
    16. Humor, having fun and making love

As a bonus, one of the best creativity triggers is to spend time with creative people, preferably the ones who are active in other industries than you. If you socialize outside of your normal social circle, new debates and thoughts will take place and that will give you many new creative ideas.

A list of creative techniques that will help you come up with brilliant ideas

One of the best ways to open your mind and improve your ideas is to use different proven creative techniques (obviously they combine different creativity triggers).

The following are the most popular creative techniques that will absolutely help you come up with brilliant ideas or improve them:

    1. Brainstorming: Generate creative ideas through intensive and freewheeling group discussions. You can also do it solo by taking a piece of paper and a pen, and writing down ideas that come to mind.
    2. Reverse brainstorming: Getting ideas by going in the opposite direction. Rather than thinking about how to solve a problem, think of how to cause the same problem. And then how to take preventive measures.
    3. 6-3-5 Brainwriting: 6 participants write down 3 ideas in 5 minutes on a paper and then swap their papers clockwise for up to six rounds. Seeing others’ ideas should encourage new idea creation.
    4. Challenge assumptions: Write down all your assumptions and ask yourself: What if [assumption] was not true?
    5. Mind Mapping: Use the mind mapping process to brainstorm or develop your ideas.
    6. Crowd-Storming: Collect ideas, comments and suggestions from people on the internet (or your friends or experts or whoever).
    7. Vision Boards: Build a collection of visual materials around your ideas.
    8. Story Board: Build a collection of visual materials that tell a story of how the idea can be applied.
    9. Role Playing: Take up the role of an ideal persona (user) for your idea and play out how the idea would help the persona in everyday life. You can involve other people in the roleplay.
    10. 5W1H method: Use questions Why, What, Who, When, Where and How to develop ideas.
    11. 5-Whys: Ask yourself “why” 5 times to identify the underlying causes of the problem and try to solve it on a different level.
    12. SCAMPER: Do the following to your ideas – Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other uses, Eliminate, Rearrange.
    13. Osborn checklist: How can you adapt, modify, substitute, magnify/maximize, minimize/eliminate, rearrange, reverse, combine or apply one of your ideas to another use?
    14. Harvey cards: Animate, contradict, symbolize, superimpose, transfer, add, substitute, distort, transform, sympathize, analogize, subtract, isolate, disguise, change size, repeat, mythologize, fantasize, combine or make a parody of your idea.
    15. The six thinking hats: Look at the problem from six different aspects – facts, subjective opinion, doubts, positive qualities, alternative ideas and process.
    16. Attribute listing: List as many attributes as possible and play with modifying them.
    17. Morphological box: Build a matrix of possible parameters (attributes) and all the possible configurations for every parameter. Then visualize and analyze all the possible combinations.
    18. Bad2Good: In every bad idea, there is something good. Find it.
    19. Participatory ideas: Invite users to participate in the process of idea generation or improvement.
    20. Forced relationships: Take an unrelated object and force your thinking into finding a relation between that object and your idea.
    21. Free associations: Fire a flow of free associations that will lead you to new ideas. Just make sure you don’t do any censorship, but rather really write down every one of your associations.
    22. Visualizing and daydreaming: Visualize improvements of your ideas, new functionalities, different applications, and so on. Just spin different images in your head.
    23. Idea borrowing: Borrow an idea and make it into something new.
    24. Biomimicry: Think about how nature would solve the problem or look for inspiration in nature’s best evolutionary ideas.
    25. Excursion technique: In your mind, go to an imaginary excursion (forest, museum, train …) and write down 8 – 10 images you saw on the journey. Draw analogies with the problem or idea.
    26. More inspiration: Gather innovations, products and technologies from all possible industries, sectors and domains, and try to apply them to your idea.
    27. Random Input: Select a random noun in a dictionary, open a book on a random page, open a random Wikipedia article. That should spark a new flow of ideas in your mind.
    28. Redefinition: Think of a broader or narrower problem from the original problem you are trying to solve. Look for solutions on those different levels.
    29. Wishing: Imagine life is just a dream. Then start a sentence with I wish or Wouldn’t it be nice if … and of course think of your idea.
    30. Walt Disney Technique: Play with your idea first as a Dreamer with no limitations, then as a Realist minding limitations, and at the end as a hard Critic thinking about how the idea can be improved.

Test a few of these techniques. Find the ones that work best for you. Enjoy a constant flow of awesome ideas. And if this still doesn’t work, organize an idea workshop where you invite all your friends and use a few of these techniques together. I have no doubt you will have lots of fun.

    Idea murderers

Protect your ideas from idea murderers

At this point, you know all the awesome tools and secrets for brainstorming great ideas. Now you have to make sure they aren’t murdered.

There are many idea murderers and your job is to protect your ideas from these evildoers. Protecting ideas from murders most often means protecting them from yourself.

These awful idea murderers are disguised as:

    1. Doubt – People won’t like it, it already exists, it’s not a unique idea, …
    2. Criticism – It’s nothing really new, anybody can come up with such an idea, it’s not perfect, …
    3. Fear – I could be mistaken, the idea might fail, we need more research, it’s not my responsibility …
    4. Status quo – It’s too big of a change, let’s keep it under consideration, the current solution works, …
    5. Predicting feasibility – The idea is not feasible, it probably won’t work, it’s not logical, …
    6. Predicting limitations – I don’t have time, it’s too expensive, the market is not ready yet, …

If you want to have really great ideas, make sure you are properly managing all the idea murderers. Here are some weapons you can use:

    • To deal with doubt, make sure that the desire to grow and individuate is stronger than the need to belong and be average.
    • To stop criticism, use the thought-stopping method we mentioned (shut up your inner critic) and be satisfied with good enough.
    • Turn mistakes and failure into validated learning.
    • Always challenge the status quo and forget about the best practices.
    • Always put your assumptions to the test. Data is more accurate than any rhetoric or your beliefs.

    Tech changes

Great ideas and opportunities come along with shifting paradigms

There is one more secret to having brilliant ideas. Great ideas always address or suggest some kind of a change. Changes are thus the biggest creative and business opportunities.

If you want to have brilliant ideas, look for the changes that are currently happening in your life or the ones you can trigger.

There is a constant flux of structural changes in all of our lives, including:

    • Technological changes
    • Social change
    • Demographic change
    • Environmental change
    • Structural changes
    • Political change
    • Regulatory change
    • Market inefficiencies
    • Industry changes

These changes hide the biggest opportunities. And when you are exposed to opportunities, ideas start to follow. There is a very simple trick you can do. To be exposed to more changes (with the goal of getting more brilliant ideas), expose yourself to a fast-changing environment.

Operating in the right industry is the first step to achieving that. You can absolutely be creative in every industry, but in some industries it’s much harder to come up with brilliant ideas; although the ideas can be much more valuable.

Established industries with a long tradition, existing markets, sustainable innovation and not many changes can be refreshed, but it’s pretty damn hard to do it. Richard Branson has the formula how to do it.

On the other hand, we have young industries with high growth, disruptive innovations, and many unknowns – the so-called blue ocean industries. These are usually the industries that destroy or reshape traditional industries. In such industries, there are many opportunities for testing and trying new ideas.

In short, many times the best thing to come up with great ideas is to be at the leading edge of some rapidly changing field. It’s never only about you. Your environment also matters, even when it comes to ideas.

    Select the best ideas

Idea prioritization – among the many, among the dirt, diamonds are hidden

The point of everything we talked about until now is to come up with as many ideas as possible on a regular basis. All the tools, tips and tricks we discussed give you the power to come up with hundreds if not thousands of ideas every week.

But we also said that most of these ideas will be crappy. So what? Among the many, brilliant ideas are hidden.

That leads us to the next stage. An important part of the idea generation process is to identify these gems. In other words, you must have a really good idea prioritization system. What you need is a set of criteria to cherry-pick the best ideas in your arsenal.

The most common criteria for idea prioritization are the following:

    1. Risks and potentials
    2. Passion
    3. Skills
    4. Market feedback
    5. Technological feasibility
    6. Economic feasibility
    7. Timing

    Risks and potentials

The two simple questions to begin idea assessment is what could go right and what could go wrong? People usually ask themselves only one of these two questions. Ask yourself both of them. What you’re looking for are ideas with small risk and big potential reward.

What could go wrong? What could go right?
    Small risk Big potential reward

    Passion

As we will talk about in the next chapter, only having brilliant ideas is never enough. You need to push your best ideas, you need to be committed to idea realization and thorough execution.

Positive feedback is absolutely important, but you are the one who has to be passionate about the idea. Thus, ask yourself – are you really honestly passionate about your idea? Provide only a deeply honest answer, otherwise things will backfire in the execution stage later.

    Skills

Your ideas must match your skills. Actually, the idea execution must be just a little bit tougher than your competences. That way, idea execution becomes a challenge.

If realizing an idea is not challenging for you, boredom will take place. But if they are too challenging, you might get scared away. So, look for ideas for which execution is just above your skills in the learning zone.

    Market feedback

Every idea has its target market, which can include customers, boss, employees, family members etc. The target market are people who will use the idea. And here comes the most important part of the idea selection criteria.

Never assume what customers will like. Never ever. Always test your ideas with the target market; and you have to do it the right way. Simply asking them whether they like your idea is the wrong way.

You have to show people how their lives will be changed, how things will be more efficient and how problems will be solved. You need to use lean startup practices to test your ideas.

Don’t ask people what they think of your ideas, show them how their lives will be changed.

If you are validating a business idea, you can already do some calculations of the market size (TAM, SAM, SOM), define potential customer segments, analyze competitive solutions, and so on.

You can do basic market research to get a real insight into how good your idea is. It takes a few hours of research to get a really great insight into how original your idea really is.

The steps to do get initial feedback from the market about your idea:

    • Do customer interviews
    • Build minimum viable products (more about that in the next chapter)
    • Analyze all the competitive solutions and ideas
    • Ask yourself – who would kill (or, better yet, pay) for such an idea right now

Ideas can be completely new or they can be improved existing solutions. They can be targeted at a completely new market (people who never used anything like that in the past) or they can address the existing market (people who use similar solutions). Either way, ideas must be technologically and economically feasible.

    Economic feasibility

It’s not rocket science to figure basic economic feasibility. You don’t need a detailed financial plan. For economic feasibility, take a napkin and a pen and write down all the costs that come with idea realization.

Everything you can think off, down to the paper clips. Then multiply the costs with Pi (3.14). That is probably more realistic. Next, think of how long it will take to execute the idea – how many days, weeks or months? Then again multiply it with Pi.

Now you know the costs. The next thing you need are revenues or savings or any other benefits that an idea can bring. If the idea is something that can be sold, check competitive products and roughly determine the price. Now calculate how many items must be sold to cover the costs.

If the idea is about savings or any other benefits, try to put some kind of value to it. It’s very basic math, but it will give you a good overall feeling of economic feasibility. Does the basic math work out?

In the initial stages, it’s much more important to talk to potential customers than to do any kind of detailed financial plans, especially if your ideas are something completely new.

Nevertheless, it’s good to know the risks (costs) involved and all the potential benefits that come with idea execution. It doesn’t take a lot of effort to do such basic calculations.

    Technological feasibility

To determine technological feasibility, you should have enough domain expertise or find someone who does and can tell if the idea is feasible.

Today technology is developed to the point where usually a much more important question is whether anybody will use the idea, rather if it can be made (if you aren’t developing a new cure for some lethal virus).

Do some basic research, talk to the experts, build a prototype yourself, and you will soon have the answer if an idea is feasible or not.

    Timing is everything

Another important aspect when it comes to new ideas is timing. Timing is everything. If the timing is wrong, that doesn’t mean you should instantly kill an idea. Because timing is rarely perfect. You have to reshape the environment in a way that the timing becomes perfect.

Thus, the right question is not whether the timing is perfect, but how to make the perfect timing. There are several ways how you can play with the timing:

    • Speeding or slowing down execution
    • Putting ideas in a different context
    • Finding ways to reduce friction
    • Mobilizing additional resources
    • Reshaping ideas

Take your ideas and put them in time and space; but not only here and now. Play with different spaces and different time dimensions. Think about how you can create a better timing for your ideas. Prioritize those ideas, which will have the perfect timing sooner in the future.

In summary, here is a checklist for validating your ideas:

Is there a manageable risk? Yes
Are there potential big rewards? Rate from 1 – 10
Am I passionate about the idea? Yes
Does the idea match my skills (is it a healthy challenge)? Yes
Can I easily get feedback from the market? Rate from 1 – 10
Can I build an MVP fast? Yes
Does the basic math work? Yes
Is the technology available yet? Yes
How good is the timing? Rate from 1 – 10
Can I start working on the idea tomorrow? Yes

Use this just as a general framework for cherry-picking your ideas. Adjust it to the time and information you have at your disposal.

Sometimes you won’t have all the data. Sometimes you will only have minutes to assess your ideas. The point of this phase is to select the best ideas you have and then come forward with them. There is still a long process before the ideas come to life and there are usually still many checkpoints.

There are a few other frameworks you can use to assess and select the best ideas. Examples are the COCD‑Box, force-field analysis, hundred-euro test, negative selection and others. If you need a more sophisticated framework, I suggest you do further research on the mentioned options.

    Rapid Prototyping

Bringing ideas to life – it all starts with a brilliant idea, but execution matters even more

The final stage of idea development is execution. There is a big difference between “I have an idea” stage and “I will build an initial version tonight” to test it or to show it to the boss or a potential client.

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Building prototypes quickly based on your idea and testing them on the market is what leads to success.

That’s where developing ideas into (business) opportunities and execution come into play. Absolutely the best framework for idea realization is the lean startup. The basic idea of the lean startup is to put the user in the center from the beginning.

Stay flexible about your initial idea and instead develop the final version together with users. At the end of the day, the idea is meant for them.

The lean startup framework is useful for testing all kinds of ideas, not only business ideas. In a short summary, the steps in the lean startup for realizing the ideas are the following:

    1. Build a vision around your idea, so you become passionate about it and infect others with your passion. Your vision must be fueled by a strong why.
    2. Create a business canvas or lean canvas to clarify your assumptions around the idea and its realization, so you can systematically test them on the market.
    3. Do customer interviews to get the first feedback on how painful actually is the problem you are trying to solve for the target market with your idea. During the interviews, find earlyevangelists (supporters) who will help you develop the final version.
    4. Build minimum viable products or prototypes and commit to validated learning from day one to further develop your ideas and add/remove functionalities.
    5. Define a set of metrics that will tell you if you’re developing your idea in the right direction. Use the metrics to pivot (change implementation strategy) when you encounter big roadblocks.

You can read more about these steps in the ultimate lean startup guide. Knowing this framework will take you from being an idea person to being a producer of awesome things with brilliant career potential.

The concluding thoughts on how to get great ideas

If you read the whole article, all the way to this point, congratulations. You really are committed to having brilliant ideas and bringing them to life.

To make sure all the valuable insights really stay with you, here is the summary of the most important facts you always have to remember:

    • You have 100 billion neurons in your brain and you are a product of billions of years of evolution. You can be creative and have brilliant ideas, you are no exception.
    • The best way to come up with great ideas is to notice them. Thus all you have to do is be a little bit more observant of your environment, mindful of your thoughts, and disciplined enough to write down ideas that you get during the day.
    • Use the advantage of habit triggers to brainstorm regularly. Find 3 – 5 triggers that push you directly into the brainstorming mode. There are more than 30 creative methods you can employ to make up brilliant ideas.
    • Doubt, criticism, fear, status quo, predicting feasibility and assuming limitations are the biggest idea murderers. Protect your ideas from the idea murderers (usually that means from yourself). Commit to putting as many ideas as possible to the test.
    • If you wish to come up with many great ideas, be curious (ask questions), observe and pay attention to people’s problems, needs and feelings. Listen and look around, and ideas will start flowing. Surrounding yourself with the right people and being in the right industry also helps a lot.
    • Have a system by which you create and prioritize your ideas. The most common prioritization factors are risks, rewards, passion, skills, market feedback, feasibility and timing.
    • Everything starts with a brilliant idea, but good execution is even more important. Use the lean startup framework to execute your ideas.

When something annoys you, it’s because you’re living in the future. The more annoyed you are, the more great ideas you should have. Now fix things that bother you with new unique ideas and bring solutions to the present.

  • How to become more creative – the secrets nobody told you about

Every single human being possesses a flow of creative energy, including you. It’s not even a question of whether you can be creative or not, since the answer is absolutely yes.

The much more sensible question is how to learn to identify, nurture and express the creative energy that resides in you.

In this article, you will learn exactly that – how to become more creative.

No matter if you see yourself as a creative person or not, whether you are terrified of expressing yourself or you are the boldest artist there is, after reading this article you will acquire many ideas for how to completely awaken the creative part of your personality and then leverage it to your advantage.

    How to become more creative

It’s impossible to feel complete without being creative

First, as with anything that requires effort in life, you need a strong reason why you should even bother igniting your creative spark.

Without a strong “why” you rarely have the stamina needed to start a new habit, project or learn a new skill. And creativity is exactly that – a combination of a habit, skills and little projects.

Emotions drive attention. Emotions direct the creative juice.

Among many ways you can benefit from creativity, there are two major ones. The first one is that in the creative society, creativity is well-cherished. Brilliant ideas are the drivers of success.

By being more creative, you can skyrocket your career. It’s that simple. Having only brilliant ideas is of course rarely enough to succeed, but it’s definitely the best start.

The second, even more important reason to develop your creativity is to give additional meaning to your life. You are here on this planet to grow, connect, enjoy and create.

Without creating in one way or another, it’s hard to feel complete. Finding yourself in the creative flow is one of the most divine experiences you can have as a human being.

Creativity gives you a chance to shine bright, to express your true self and to transform raw energies into subtler ones (in psychology, it’s called the sublimation of needs).

With creativity, you can even leave a legacy if you manage to impact the masses with your brilliant ideas. And there’s more. Creativity can empower your growth, gives you new ways to connect with other people, and provides a unique way of enjoying life. What more could one ask for?

The four paths to finding and developing your creative self

There are four completely different paths (based on two variables) to the development of your creative self. The first variable is about possessing obvious traditional artistic talent or, on the other extreme, considering yourself as not possessing creative personality at all.

The second variable concerns your environment. Every personality trait (including creative talent) can be enhanced, decreased, woken up or eliminated by life experiences. Your creativity can be encouraged or stifled based on your functioning in a specific environment.

    The creativity matrix

    Individuals in a supportive environment

Some people are lucky to discover their medium for creating at a young age while their parents provide a supportive environment for their talents to be developed. If a child shows drawing, singing, acting or any other kind of artistic capabilities that are constantly encouraged, we get “natural born artists”.

A combination of talent and the environment that enables at least 10,000 hours of practice is what creates outliers, the most successful people of humankind. There are rare exceptions, but this is the safest success formula when creative talents are involved.

Outliers = Talent + Supportive environment that enables 10,000 hours of practice + Other factors

Then we have people with no obvious artistic talent, but being in a supportive environment helps them find a way to express their creativity. These are the individuals with a very strong growth mindset.

The core of their belief system is that talent is overrated and that they can learn any skill (artistic or not) if they put in enough effort. They are hard workers who learn how to be creative with enough time and effort. They absolutely have to work much harder than the talented people to achieve the same level of mastery.

These two groups rarely have a problem being creative.

    Individuals in a non-supportive environment

Then there are two groups of people who do have challenges with expressing their creative self.

People that have traditional artistic talent and are in a very critical and non-supportive environment develop strong mistrust in themselves and life, together with severe feelings of shame, guilt, doubt and inferiority.

Their true self and creative talents get stifled and the desire to shine is suppressed. They know what their talents are, they have the urge to express themselves, but they are keeping themselves locked in an emotional cage.

The last group of people are the ones with no obvious artistic talent combined with a non-supportive environment. These people most often see themselves as not creative at all and they aren’t particularly bothered by that fact.

They don’t believe they can express themselves in a creative way, so they don’t even try. But they are just letting parts of their personality go undiscovered, and the creative urges is buried deep in the unconscious mind.

In which quadrant do you fall?

    The worst enemies to creativity

Creative crisis – In the dark, the stars shine the brightest

Creativity and a strong healthy ego are very closely interconnected. If you want to express your creative self, you need to believe in yourself.

Because only then can you take initiative and put your creations in front of others to be judged, while not really being affected by the judgements. Without a healthy ego, the fear of not being accepted is just too strong.

There are many ways how self-expression can be blocked. One extreme is symbolic self-castration, with common examples like laziness, procrastination and denial. The other extreme is creative aggression where good taste extends into neediness, exaggeration and narcissism.

Creative doing is a natural human desire and tendency. When suppressed, it always backfires.

If you don’t consider yourself creative or if you don’t express your creative talents, you always suffer from some type of existential crisis.

    How does creativity get stifled?

The question is how creativity even gets stifled. Usually it happens during a child’s upbringing.

Here are only a few very common examples:

    • You create something and nobody gives you any praise or they focus on the mistakes
    • You are constantly criticized for everything you do (“it’s good, but it could be better”)
    • When you want to explain something, you are shut down (“don’t speak while we eat”)
    • You are not allowed to have your own style or opinion or do things your own way
    • Nobody encourages you to go through failure and to regularly practice to develop your talents
    • You are not allowed to play and you have to grow up too quickly
    • You are labeled as being childish when you don’t act grown up and aren’t serious
    • Nobody is mentoring you and showing you how you can progress in developing your talents
    • Nobody asks you about your wishes, needs and opinions or what you want
    • Your imagination is not nurtured with stories, answering your questions and being open-minded in general

Creating - How does it make you feel

Resolving the inner crisis with reframing

There are two resolutions to this conflict. The first one is best illustrated with the quote: “in the dark the stars shine the brightest”. Research has shown that rejection and isolation can be great fuel for creativity.

By definition, being creative means being different, and being different very often leads to being rejected, at least in the beginning. A non-supportive environment does exactly that, it rejects your potential instead of encouraging it, merely because you are different.

If you want to be creative, you must be rejected.

How can you be creative, if you want to fit in (and gain some approval) at all costs? Creativity means being or finding something that is different, something that doesn’t fit in.

That means you need a new context for feeling rejected, you need to reframe your thinking in a way that rejection doesn’t dry your creativity (with the desire to fit in), but fuels it (with the desire to stand out).

In the new mental frame, you must see the need to individuate stronger than the need to belong. Your urge to stand out must be stronger than the need to fit in.

You have to make your mission to express your creative self greater than any rejection or criticism you might encounter on you path to self-actualization by the society. You need to disinvest yourself from the society’s opinion and invest more into yourself and your independence.

Society feels threatened by everything different, but the moment you become like them, nobody notices you anymore.

An inner and outer environment that support your creative expression

The second way to become more creative is to provide yourself the supportive environment you didn’t have when growing up. That can be achieved from within and by changing external circumstances.

Providing yourself the supportive environment from within is the so-called self-mothering and self-fathering concept. It might sound a little bit ridiculous, but it works.

Self-mothering and self-fathering means developing a compassionate and encouraging relation with yourself, where you start to slowly encourage your creative expressions.

Mindfulness, properly managing your mind, creative visualization, bibliotherapy, exploring your subconscious and play are only a few of the mechanisms how to make a step further in this direction.

Stay creative when you grow up

Often the best first step to reconnect with your creative part is to start playing.

Videogames, sports, dancing, flirting, playing with children, reading fiction books and telling jokes are examples of good ways to loosen yourself up and see that your relaxed and creative nature doesn’t always lead to rejection, but rather to the thing you crave the most – being loved and admired.

Besides the internal environment, your external environment greatly influences your creativity. If you want to be more creative, you must build yourself a motivational and supportive environment. In the adult age, many external circumstances are under your control.

You can surround yourself with people who support your creative talents, you can join meetup and hobby groups, you can work in a company with many smart and creative people and provide everything else necessary to nurture your creativity.

It’s impossible to become more creative if you aren’t willing to make some changes in your life, internal and external.

To deeply connect with others, you have to polarize. If you want to polarize, you must express your unique creative self. There is no other way.

    Find the right medium

Undiscovered self – It’s time to find a fitting medium and the right context

People with no obvious creative talent have the same issue as people with the talent in a non-supportive environment, with one additional burden.

They are not aware of their desire to create and even if they wanted to create, they have no idea how. Art, innovation and ideas are completely alien to them.

Usually their conflict seems less severe, at least on the conscious level. They are not creative types, so why bother to creatively express themselves at all.

To live a full, complete and integrated life you must find a way to creatively express yourself. Either you find a way at one point in your life, or your needs are suppressed in a nasty way; and that always brings some form of negativity in your life.

If you consider yourself non-creative, the first step you must make is to find the right medium and context that sparks your creativity. The first step is to use the search mode and experiment in what situations and with what kind of channel you can creatively express yourself.

In other words, if you fall in this group, you have to try dozens of different arts to find the one that best suits your creative self.

Logically, if you don’t possess traditional artistic talent, you have to find some uncommon one. I helped hundreds of people discover their unusual creative talents. Here are only a few ways how the people I mentored found their creative selves:

    • Connecting difficult family members in a creative way
    • Telling jokes or creating memes
    • Cooking, baking, making sweets
    • Playing games with children
    • Flirting in a creative way or applying bed skills
    • Improving processes in the company in completely new ways
    • Interpreting death or spirituality in a new way
    • Combining knowledge from two different industries
    • Finding new ways to solve big humanitarian problems
    • Organizing unique events
    • Making educational videos
    • Hacking mathematical equations
    • Tattoos, fashion etc.

In addition to that, there are hundreds of different hobbies you can try. And don’t forget to try all the traditional artistic professions.

I can guarantee you that if you try hundreds of different things you will find the one that is your perfect fit. All you need is a little bit of courage. After that, your life will never be the same again. You will open the doors to higher vibrations and divine realms.

Finding a way to express your creativity means finding the right medium. It can be connecting words, colors, moves, curves, numbers, relationships, tones, facts or anything else in new creative ways. But once you find your medium, you also need to find the right context that regularly sparks your creativity.

    Your creative environemnt

Creativity is a habit and a skill, not a special gift

Creativity is not a magic wand a few possess. It’s not an unlimited resource that some people have at their own disposal and advantage when they need it to dominate others, without any cost.

Creativity is a habit. You have to practice to be more and more creative, and you have to nurture your creativity. That means you can be creative only in a specific context, with specific life circumstances and big investments in the form of time and effort.

The context is everything that encourages your creative routine.

It includes everything from reminders (habit triggers) to how you organize your environment (minimal transaction costs) and finally to deliberately practicing creative tasks with pure self-discipline and stamina (timeboxing time for practice). And we must also not forget the rewards you enjoy in the end.

The context is about organizing your life in a way that you regularly find yourself in front of the medium while you can forget about everything else and just create.

If you want to be creative, you must put in the effort to organize your life circumstances in a way that you can create in the flow without any distractions for a few hours every day.

You can be the most talented person in the world, but without practice the talent goes to waste. Hard work beats talent every time. Don’t assume some people have a gift that is only a great resource without any investment and costs. There are no shortcuts in life (or only a few).

Knowing that creativity is only a habit, here are a few ways to nurture and develop it:

    1. Create many different things every day
    2. Regularly practice opening your mind
    3. Practice makes your skills perfect

    Create many things every day

Create many new things every day

Once, I visited Leonardo Da Vinci’s exhibition. I was surprised at how many unsuccessful inventions and “ugly” pictures he drew. And he is one of the biggest inventors and artists of all time. I had thought that everything he touched became a masterpiece.

But I was wrong. He had to sketch hundreds of ideas to develop a few brilliant ones. Pablo Picasso was no different. He created more than 50,000 pieces of art in his lifetime.

An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cells it occupied. – A.G.

That leads us to a simple conclusion. If you want to be more creative, you have to create every single day. And you have to create a lot. Here are a few ideas how you can achieve that:

    1. Brainstorm ideas every single day. If you don’t write down at least 10 ideas every day, don’t go to sleep. Much like you don’t go to sleep if you don’t read at least one page of a book.
    2. Don’t judge your ideas when you brainstorm. Write down every single ridiculous idea you can think of. Kick your inner critic’s ass if s/he wants to interfere. New ideas are fragile.
    3. Rank your ideas and then start prototyping. Use your medium and prototype like crazy. Prototyping is the first step to materializing your ideas. Nothing kills a brilliant idea faster than dull execution.
    4. Try to combine new ideas, all the knowledge you possess, and play with ideas in all the ridiculous ways possible. Every day, try to think in a new creative way.
    5. Make sure you use the diffused mode of thinking between creating time. Go for a walk or take a nap. Your mind will still be creating, and soon brilliant ideas will come out of nowhere.
    6. Don’t have problems being wrong. Mistake shouldn’t be the word you’re too embarrassed to use. You’re the product of a trillion mistakes. Evolution forged the entirety of sentient life on this planet using only one tool: the mistake (it’s a quote from Westworld). You should use it too.
    7. Exercise and eat brain foods! Both really do stimulate your brain and creativity.
    8. Last but not least, know that your unique style comes from your limitations, not your strengths. Your unique style gets developed by finding a way of working around your shortcomings.
    9. Mae sure you free your working memeory as much as possible

Disinvest yourself from the society’s opinion, invest yourself into examining your soul to find the creative spring in you, and then create like crazy.

    Open your mind

    Regularly practice opening your mind

Your mind is like a parachute. It only works when it’s open. You learned and inherited hundreds of limiting beliefs that you have to unlearn. The only way to unlearn limitations is by practicing and regularly breaking the rules (in a healthy way).

Here are a few ideas how you can achieve that:

    1. Always be curious and ask yourself and others “why” thousands of times.
    2. Know that everything can be improved and everything can be done in a better way. There is no such thing as a best practice.
    3. Regularly ask yourself: what would happen if I created, did, believed… the opposite. Every single belief you currently have is a cold blocker of imagination, innovation and improvements.
    4. Don’t get stuck on fixed ideas – stay flexible. There are many ways to achieve the same thing.
    5. Sometimes imagine that life is just a dream without any limitations. Imagine how the future will look in 10, 20 and 100 years. Imagine that there are no physical laws.
    6. Always try new things, never chain yourself by sticking solely to things you already mastered.
    7. Think about how you can do everyday tasks you already mastered in a new different way.
    8. In the beginning, be satisfied with good enough, with small first steps, and then you can scale up the quality of your work.
    9. Spend time with smart people, they will further help you develop your creativity.
    10. Constantly learn and read a lot.

Every creative masterpiece contains an element of surprise. If you want to surprise people, you must create something unexpected. To create something unexpected, you must think in uncommon ways. Dare to be different.

    Practice makes perfect

    Practice makes things perfect

Talent isn’t something you possess, it’s something you do. And it all starts with mastering the basics. The more you master the basics, the more creative you can become.

Because when you master the basics, you can devote more working memory to connecting ideas in a new creative way. That’s why you want to always master many different basics – “knowledge chunks” that you store in your long-term memory.

It might sound complicated, but it’s actually quite simple. Knowledge chunks stored in your long-term memory include information, experiences, motoric skills, cognitive skills and conditioning effects (habits, patterns).

These are the building blocks that enable you to mix ideas together in a new creative way. The more of these building blocks you possess, the more creative you can be.

That’s where the 10,000 hours rule (or daily hard work, in other words) comes into place. The more you master the basics and correctly practice new things, the more creative you can become. It’s a double benefit.

Not only does the practice make you master a specific skill, you can also come up with more creative ideas in that domain.

The end formula for being more creative is thus pretty simple. Make sure you master different basic blocks of knowledge (practice them until you get bored) and then put in the effort to mix them in new creative ways.

And don’t forget that keeping your mind open and regularly stretching it will help you more easily find new connections between the building blocks. That’s it.

All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it’s like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you’re making stuff, what you’re making isn’t so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you’re making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.

Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn’t as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that.

    Ira Glass

The last thing you have to know about creative endeavors is, as the quote above illustrates, that beginnings suck. The first steps are usually the hardest, but they also keep the people who are not serious about self-actualization away from creativity.

Don’t be one of them. Every next step you take becomes much easier. And make sure you don’t compare your beginning with someone else’s middle or the top of their career.

    The secrets to creativity

The summary – how to become more creative

    1. Make expressing yourself in some creative way, no matter what it is, part of your life mission. Find your “why” to create. Your life will be greatly enriched and your existence here on this planet much more fulfilling.
    2. Reframe your creative crisis if you have issues with mistrust, doubt, guilt and shame. Make the desire to individuate stronger than the need to belong. Foresee that expressing your uniqueness will probably lead to the most honest belonging in the end.
    3. Experiment with hundreds of creative things to find the medium that is your perfect fit. Then learn to organize your environment and life circumstances in a way that you will be able to create in the flow with the right medium every single day.
    4. If you want to be creative, you must produce many new things daily – without judging yourself or minding what the society will think. In hundreds of average ideas, a brilliant one will be born. Have a goal to create at least 50,000 creative pieces in your lifetime.
    5. Ideas are never enough. When you find the right idea, have the courage to materialize it with prototyping, and then finalize the best ones. All you need is a little bit of courage. First be open-minded, then be satisfied with good enough and in the end, create a unique masterpiece.
    6. Every single one of your beliefs is a creativity killer. Thus, you have to constantly practice open‑mindedness by challenging yourself, thinking and doing the opposite, and stretching your ideas to ridiculous proportions.
    7. Creativity is a habit and a skill, which means you have to practice it daily. You have to learn to master the basics and then strive to connect the things you master in a new unique way. It only takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve that.
    8. Last but no least, the best first step to unleashing creativity is to learn how to play again and to not compare yourself with others. Individuate!
  • The success matrix – how inspiration and hard work improve your luck

From the macro perspective, there are only two paths to success. Either you get lucky first and then play your cards smart, or you work hard and smart until you get lucky.

In the first scenario, you just wait for the right opportunity to appear, while in the second scenario you put all the possible effort into creating your own luck and opportunities.

Then we have two general motives for why people want to become more successful or at least make positive changes in their lives. One possible motive is desperation and the other is inspiration.

Some people are inspired to take steps forward by their life visions and goals, while others wait until things get unbearably hard and they are forced to act.

Now let’s further analyze these four categories (luck, smart & hard work, inspiration, desperation) and then build a matrix out of them to seek some wisdom and various life lessons.

    Luck versus hard work

Luck versus smart & hard work

Some people become ultra-successful simply by being lucky. They get “discovered” on the street and win an important movie role, they become one of the first employees in a startup that grows really fast, they sign a big long-term contract based on nepotism, they become famous on YouTube by playing games, and so on.

I’ve seen it over and over again. People with mediocre talent, who put no real effort in anything, getting lucky and winning big. Doing almost nothing. It happens quite often. These lucky individuals often evoke a bitter taste for all the smart and hard workers and even for all other people in general.

But that’s the name of the game. Every lottery has its winners and its losers. It is how it is, and it will probably stay that way for a long time. Torturing your brain cells why life works that way is a big waste. The more interesting question is what kind of life lessons the lucky winners hide.

The first lesson is that luck doesn’t last forever. Even when you get lucky, you still have to play your cards smart. There are many people who get famous, rich or successful overnight but in a few years they end up in bankruptcy, rehab or with STDs by making a series of stupid decisions.

Being lucky is never enough to be successful in the long term, you also have to play your cards smart.

The second important fact that we often miss (and that the mass media rarely talks about) is that for every person who gets lucky, there are thousands of people who don’t. They wait for their slice of cake and nothing happens.

There are thousands of people who hope to get discovered in Hollywood and nothing happens. That’s why it’s called the land of broken dreams. There are thousands of people who build great products and nobody buys them. That’s why most startups fail.

The lessons here are that (1) you are not alone if you feel unlucky, you’re actually part of the majority. You are as unique and entitled to things as everybody else. In other words, people are not entitled to anything, with a few lucky exceptions. That leads us to the next lesson.

Waiting for luck to strike you out of the blue is probably not the best winning strategy. You might wait until the end of your life and Fortuna still won’t knock on your doors.

It’s much better to work hard and smart, and then trust the rule that the harder and smarter you work, the luckier you get. By doing all the hard and smart work before you get lucky, you also learn how to manage huge success once luck strikes you, so you can play your cards smart; otherwise you can quickly run out of luck.

And when you talk to many successful people, you soon figure out that really lucky are only few – one per millions. For the majority of successful people the overnight success came after years of hard work. It only looks different from far away.

    The main takeaways:

    1. If you feel unlucky, you are not. There are millions of people in pretty much the same position as you are. You need to keep a realistic view on how things are.
    2. Luck is never enough to be successful in the long term, you also have to play your cards smart. So maybe if you currently feel unlucky, this is just practice for you to learn how to handle success with hard and smart work.
    3. Without luck, it’s almost impossible to be really successful, but you can increase your chances of being lucky by working hard and smart. The best way to reach “overnight success” is by years of hard and smart work.

    Inspiration versus desperation

    Inspiration versus desperation

There are two motives behind why people act. One is inspiration. You get inspired by your dreams, visions or success stories of other people. Your creative ideas and positive energy drive you forward, focusing on all the opportunities and possibilities life has to offer.

Some people are given that kind of life visions from their young age; their parents probably inspired them to see everything they can achieve in life. They saw the potential and inflamed the spark for self-actualization in a young human being. But those individuals are rare.

All the other people who work out of inspiration sat down at some point in their life and decided what their life mission will be. They saw their life as a canvas on which they can create their masterpiece.

They took time to define what they want to achieve in their life and from that day on, that drives them to work hard and smart every single day. The good news is that you can do the same at any moment in your life if you feel uninspired.

Then we have people without any inspirations, people without big dreams. There’s nothing wrong with living a life without big aspirations, as long as you don’t slowly and desperately slide into a zombie life. Getting fatter and fatter, acquiring more and more debt for buying things you can’t afford, and so on.

Many times, people continue with bad habits until their life situation gets really disastrous – illnesses, losing their home, nasty breakups etc. Don’t be one of them.

Inspiration is absolutely a much better motivational force than desperation. It might be hard to find inspiration in life, especially if you didn’t know what to do with your life already at the age of 10, but once you find the inspiration, things get much easier.

The hard road becomes easy. You finally begin to work for fulfillment purposes. So all you have to do is sit down and explore your inner self to find what lights a fire in your belly. That is the hard part, but once you do it things only get easier.

    The main takeaways:

    • It’s much smarter to be motivated by inspiration than desperation.
    • Much like there are rare lucky people who get successful just by being in the right place at the right time, in the same way are rare all the people who know their mission from a young age.
    • To find inspiration, you have to take time and explore your inner self. It’s not an easy task to do, but once you find your mission, life becomes much more fulfilling. You probably heard the quote that the two most important days in your life are when you were born and when you find out why.
    • There’s nothing better than living life out of mission, and nothing worse than being forced to act because your situation gets so shitty. Desperation rarely leads to success.
    • When you act out of desperation, you are usually forced to lower your moral values, which is never a good thing. What is left to a man without integrity?

Based on all four factors we can build a success matrix and the four ways how people become successful. Each way holds further important life lessons that can help you with your own success.

    The success matrix

Lessons from the naïve ones – don’t sabotage your own luck

You’ve probably heard of the book The Secret. It talks about the law of attraction and how you can manifest great things in your life only with your imagination. Imagine money flowing into your life, and the financial abundance will start to manifest.

We can debate all day if such manifestations work or if it’s just a ridiculous concept. But that would be a waste of time. So the better question is what sensible things we can learn from “the secret” believers that makes sense in general to increase your own chances with luck. I see at least two lessons.

    The secret - Magic check
    Source: The secret

The first one is that you have to open your mind for the opportunities. Many people are blind when fortunate things are happening right in front of their eyes. Many people get lucky because they recognize the opportunities in their environment.

They visualize opportunities and then they pay attention to them. Whether you believe in the law of attraction or not, open your mind to all the opportunities in your environment. Never ask yourself only what could go wrong, but also what could go right. Believe there are opportunities in your environment and then find them.

The second important lesson to take away is that no one has absolute luck and no one has absolute misfortune in life. There are always some areas of life where you are lucky. Maybe you are smart, maybe you have good genes, a warm personality, strong character, rich friends or something else.

You have to be honest with yourself where you are lucky in life and that should be your source of inspiration and gratefulness to attract even more luck in your life. It can happen that some people feel ultra-lucky for things that you take for granted. They try to manifest things that you already enjoy every day.

    The main takeaways:

    • Recognize that good things can happen to you, often without any reason. Maybe creative visualization can help with keeping an open mind for the opportunities in your environment.
    • Nobody is completely lucky or unlucky in life. Find the areas where you are lucky and make sure you are grateful for that. Believe that you are the lucky one and you will automatically find many proofs for that.

    Playing lottery

The lottery winners – if you don’t buy the ticket, you can’t win the game

The worst position to be in is to be desperate and hoping for luck to strike. You know, the scenario of buying a lottery ticket with your last money, hoping for somebody to call and offer you a job while wasting time in bars, smoking when you have cancer because you hope that an operation will solve all your problems, and so on.

Fortune absolutely also visits some desperate people who hold still from time to time. But being desperate and hoping for luck means walking on a very thin line.

If luck doesn’t visit you, you can destroy decades of your life or even your whole life. It’s much better to have a solid and sound strategy how you will get yourself out of the shitty situation than just hoping for luck to strike. Neverthless, there is an important lesson hidden in the desperate people who become the lucky winners.

Even if you have a solid strategy for getting out of hell, don’t forget to count on luck from time to time. Never assume that you are not the lucky one. Occasionally, you have to take blind (controllable) risks, even when you’re desperate.

Just make sure that you’re taking risks with a small downside and big upside potential. Test that “stupid” idea that takes one weekend to realize. Apply for jobs that pay 10x more than your current job is paying if you meet the minimum criteria. Write for a partnership to that big company.

Always have open arms for Fortuna while you’re working hard. Sometimes big moves can get you out of trouble. Many times fortune favors the brave. In summary:

    • Please don’t count only on luck, but also don’t hate it.
    • Pay attention to all the tickets with a small downside and big upside potential you can buy. You don’t have to buy all of them, but from time to time you can test your luck.
    • The dumbest farmer grows the biggest potato, so sometimes play dumb and make a big move. Prepare for the worst (and make sure downsides are under control), but hope for the best.
    • Know the difference between smart big risks and stupid decisions.

    Grinder - hard work

Grinders are the people we respect the most – the lesson: tough times build character

If you aren’t lucky per se, the only other way to success is through creating your own luck. If you want to create your own luck, you have to make sure that a lot of things are happening in your life. You must expose yourself to as many opportunities as possible. You must fight and grind.

To all the grinders, lucky people are often a big reminder that life’s not fair; or at least not fair in the way we would hope it to be. So they can get bitter and that’s never good.

That’s also the first lesson we can learn here. Grinders who only work hard usually have wrong assumptions about fairness. They assume that life fairness works like this:

    • If I’m a good person, good things will happen to me in all areas of life
    • If I make a great product, people will see that and buy it
    • If I write a good article, people will love to read it
    • If I do quality work, I will be appreciated and rewarded
    • If I work hard, somebody will notice that and reward me

That’s not how life fairness works. Life rewards those who work hard and smart. Life rewards rewards those who master its rules. Life reward those who manage to create and market things people actually want to buy or use, not things you assume people will like based on what you like.

Life rewards those who find a way to impact the masses. If you want to earn millions or gain the attention of millions, you have to impact millions; and only better quality is rarely the right answer to that. Actually, it’s more about marketing than creating quality things. Marketing is everything.

The second very important lesson is that grinders who succeed are held in special respect in the society. We all admire people who manage to get themselves out of shitty situations only by smart and hard work and without getting lucky.

Books are written about grinders and movies are filmed. Because grinders are the ones who develop the most stamina, resilience and grit. Grinders are the one who develop the most skills at the end of their journey.

Grinders are the ones who show to the world that you can do it, even if luck is not on your side. So, it’s kind of a blessing to be a grinder. The main takeaways:

    1. No matter how hard things are, if you don’t like something, move. You’re not a tree. Much like you can always decide what your life mission will be, so you can always decide to become a grinder.
    2. As a grinder, you have to work smart and have a realistic view of what fairness means, otherwise you can get very bitter. If you want to be a successful grinder, you have to learn to respect the markets and life rules.
    3. To become a grinder, you need a mission greater than life (to be able to travel through hell).
    4. Grinders are held in special respect in the society and that is a special kind of reward. Legacy is always greater than currency.
    5. Soft times make soft people, tough times build grinders with character.
Hustler - sells and enjoys life
    Source: Netflix

The hustlers – don’t forget to enjoy the ride

The last group of successful people are the hustlers. Hustlers have a special life philosophy and they come in two flavors.

One group of hustlers have the philosophy that goes something along the lines of “Life is a b*tch, so learn how to f*ck it”. The other group are producers who are determined to co-create the world. Both of them are, in some special way, happy and satisfied even when doing Sisyphean tasks.

The hustlers usually have the same struggles as the grinders, they just operate in better environments, had a better starting point (rich and supportive parents, commercial hubs, having mentors etc.) or possess a more positive angle on life.

They don’t see their work as a struggle but as a pure mission and satisfaction. They know how to create, they know how to sell, and they know how to enjoy the ride. They are in love with creating and solving problems.

They never see themselves as victims, because they know it doesn’t suit them. They work hard, but they also strive to play hard and don’t bother with luck. Even though they do go to the casino from time to time.

They play life like a video game, trying to get the most out of it. They go for the things they want and they see life as a playground with endless possibilities. At the end, because they are brave, fortune starts to favor them.

    In summary:

    1. Try to imagine Sisyphus happy. When you achieve that, you don’t need luck and you will be at peace every day. Enjoy the daily hustle, and you will enjoy life forever.
    2. Don’t forget to enjoy the road to success. It’s not only about the end goal, it’s also about the path itself. You are here to grow, create, connect and enjoy life.

The journey across the success matrix

Here is the last lesson. In your lifetime, you often find yourself in different quadrants of the success matrix. You can’t spend your whole life in only one quadrant. Sometimes you will feel lucky, sometimes inspired, sometimes unlucky, and sometimes desperate.

But these are only your feelings, your perspectives and interpretations. You can always change your perspective and enter a different quadrant with all the lessons we’ve learned:

    1. If you feel unlucky, list all the things you are grateful for in life and where you do have luck. Nobody has absolute luck and nobody is completely unlucky. You are also the lucky one.
    2. Expose yourself to more opportunities to increase your chances of luck. Write to people, network, generate ideas etc. You can’t get lucky at a game you’re not playing.
    3. Don’t rely only on luck, instead have a plan, work hard and smart, but still believe that good things will happen to you. A combination of believing in luck and doing smart and hard work is the best.
    4. In the dark, stars shine the brightest. The darkest hours can give you the greatest strength to turn your desperations into inspirations. There is nothing more powerful than a man on a mission. Find your mission.
    5. And if you feel completely unlucky, remember that soft times make soft people. Grinders and hustlers are the ones who develop character, stamina, strength and other virtues. Maybe they are the true lucky ones.
  • How to analyze the environment to make sure trends and people are working in your favor

The environment you operate in greatly determines how successful and happy you will be. The right environment is like a leverage or accelerator that helps you achieve your goals faster and more easily. Your environment also greatly influences how you think, talk, and act.

That means your agency and potential are determined by (1) your personality and (2) the environment in which you find yourself. There are two important parts of the agency equation and you must pay attention to both.

An integral part of self-improvement is thus building yourself the right environment. I call it a motivational environment.

An environment with many opportunities, where you can thrive by employing all your talents and where you can get promoted for good work done; an environment that encourages you and pushes you to constantly improve and grow, but also offers support, empathy and safety nets.

I know that motivational environments are rare, but they do exist or you can help build (yourself and others) one. You must never forget the power of the environment when you are making decisions in life.

    Nobody can succeed alone

You can be a Superman, but if you operate in the wrong environment, your stamina sooner or later gets spent, your spirit demoralized and your ambitions stifled. Nobody can succeed alone, we all need strong support from the right kind of people, an encouraging culture, and positive market trends.

Where you currently are = Your starting point + Your character + Your environment

In most cases, the environments are the ones that choose people. Unfortunately, when people don’t consciously build the right environment for themselves, they usually get stuck in the wrong ones. Don’t let that happen to you.

You can choose or, to be more exact, build yourself the right kind of environment. You have enough personal power to do that, at least to a certain extent. Choosing the right environment for yourself equals being proactive, working in a smart way and having a superior life strategy.

In this blog post, you will learn how to analyze the environment to make sure people and trends are working in your favor and that they aren’t hindering your potential. You will learn how to analyze the environment you operate in and to act – to consciously choose the right environment for yourself, not just accidentally find yourself in the wrong one.

Why the environment matters so much?

I operated in the best environments (elite high school, startup accelerators etc.) and very bad ones (almost a ghetto where I was raised in the 90s, government organizations, broken family etc.). For me as a highly sensitive person, it immediately became obvious how big of an impact an environment has.

Being in a bad neighborhood is like being a healthy apple among rotten apples. You sooner or later start rotting, even if you aren’t aware of it. On the other hand, being in a good neighborhood is like being a green tomato among the juicy red ones.

Sooner or later, you too become ripe and you thrive. There are exceptions, of course, but the general rule is that you become who and where you spend the most of your time.

Here are the main reasons why the environment is so important:

    1. The environment has a great influence on your values and behavior
    2. In the right kind of environment, there are many opportunities you can undertake
    3. There is more room for collaboration and less need for competition when trends are supporting you (and all the other entities)
    4. Positive trends work like accelerators that enable you to reach your goals faster
    5. In the end, the environment greatly determines the quality of your life

Firstly, the environment greatly influences your values and behaviors. In my career, I collaborated with hundreds of companies and there was always the same pattern.

In poorly performing companies with bad culture, people were gossiping, fighting and spreading negative energy instead of being productive and innovative. People who wanted to do good were suffering and newcomers didn’t last a few weeks before they were drawn into fights, manipulations and injustice.

In contrast, a relatively healthy environment encourages collaboration, innovation and transparency. The vibe in the office is positive, people are smiling, even if working hard. If everyone is helping you improve and progress, you start to help others sooner or later.

If everybody is contributing ideas and isn’t being judged for the bad ones, you gather the courage to start contributing ideas sooner or later. That’s why Steve Jobs has a no bozo rule in the company and decided to work exclusively with A-people.

It’s the same with families. If a family is toxic, everyone develops their own (toxic) survival mechanism (heroes, mascots, scapegoats, distant person etc.). The energies with which the toxic family operates are dishonesty, shame, guilt, control, ignorance and other manipulations. It’s impossible to be emotionally well in such an environment.

There is no perfect environment, there are frictions in every single one of them, but there is a limit when an environment becomes toxic. In healthy families, empathy, love, tolerance and encouragements are in the first place.

Then there are opportunities. If there are no opportunities, people are forced to brutally compete, or in the worst case even slaughter each other (wars). When markets go down, when there are no jobs and bank accounts are empty, people must fight.

In such environments, you are forced to forget about values, integrity and collaboration, and take care of your own survival. Few people are capable of collaboration, empathy and support in such brutal circumstances.

On the other hand, when markets are booming, you are exposed to many business opportunities and that is the strongest possible safety net. When you take care of your basic safety and financial needs, you can then finally climb much higher on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

You can invest your mind and energy into collaboration, self-actualization, love, belonging and recognition. Markets are fluid, they go up and down, but you can absolutely make sure that they work in your favor, that they don’t kick you off the pyramid to the bottom. Never ignore what’s happening to markets, because markets always win.

Finally, the environment can work either like a big accelerator or a repressor. Two people with the same level of competence on different markets have completely different potential. A person on the right market has the potential to become a millionaire and a person on the wrong market can get nothing but gray hair in a few months.

As you can see, the environment is half of the equation for how quality your life will be, if not even more. One part of the equation is working on yourself (personal development and constant improvement), the other part is finding yourself in the right environment. Your environment determines your potential as much as you determine it with your own personal power.

    Your- nvironment

Elements of the environment that greatly influence your life

There are two important elements of every environment – people and trends. People represent everything from general culture in your country, office or home to individuals you work with or interact with on a daily basis. They all have a great influence on your life. People can make your life on Earth heaven or hell.

The second element of the environment are trends (together with how good the current situation is). There are many different trends that influence your life, from political and economic trends to social and technological ones.

We can also add legal and environmental factors to the list. Economic trends are usually the most important, because when the economy collapses, it drags everything else down with it. Trends can be positive or negative.

When I talk about trends, there are really two important factors – the current situation and the outlook. Not to make things too complicated I call it “trends” with one word. Why?

After travelling to 50 countries, what I’ve noticed is that in less developed countries if trends were positive, people were generally more satisfied than those in more developed countries that were losing their competitive advantage.

The state of every environment is important, but the outlook matters even more in many cases; because the outlook is the one that kills or encourages hope.

Now let’s move on. People and trends are the basic compounds of every environment. They both influence every individual in two different habitats where we all operate:

    • Personal environment, together with home, spouse, family and friends
    • Business environment, together with office, co-workers and stakeholders

All four variables are highly connected (people, trends, personal, business). If you are unhappy at your job, you usually spread the misery in your home environment. If you have a lot of support at home, you can show support to other people at your job. If you don’t earn enough money in the business environment, it greatly influences the quality of your personal life and your family.

That means you must mind all four variables – people in your personal and business environment, and different new paradigms that are coming in sight in both habitats. If you miss one disruptive change or disruptive person that comes into your business or personal life, you can quickly get tripped up and everything collapses. It’s not about being paranoid. It’s about being prepared, smart and keeping your eyes open.

Knowing all four categories, let’s microscopically break down the elements of the environment that influence your life. That will be the basic framework for our analysis. As I mentioned, every element influences your personal and business life, since everything is interconnected, but usually it has more influence in one single area.

    Personal Both Business
    Spouse Country culture Boss
Primary family Political status and trends Coworkers
Secondary family Economic status and trends Mentors
    Friends Legal system Stakeholders
    Social trends Infrastructure Company culture
Environmental trends Weather and climate Technology trends
Home location & neighbors Social security Office location
Access to healthcare Access to education Market trends
Quality of food Demographic trends Business opportunities
Community life, meetups Transparency & Corruption Access to resources
Dominating religion Gender equality Competition level
Access to nature Tolerance Purchasing power
Cultural life Work-Life balance Innovation level
Access to information Freedom International integration
Physical security Economic inequality Strong industries

Understanding the perfect environment for benchmarking purposes

Now we know that to prosper in life, you need to be part of an environment that feels like home and natural to you, and enables you to prosper, develop and grow. It’s very simple to know if you are in the right environment. If you have to ask yourself, you’re not. You just know it deep down.

Next we have the question of positive and negative trends. If the environmental outlook is positive, that usually gives people hope and will to live and fight. If the outlook is negative, people often turn to zombies. But what are positive trends? It’s quite simple.

If the environment is developing towards the perfect environment, then the trends are positive. If the environment is moving away from the perfect environment, then the trends are negative and you should somehow act to mitigate the risk and potential damage.

Then we have the main rule about the perfect environment. No environment is perfect. Friction, tension and challenges are always present in every environment. That’s what enables progress, innovation and personal development.

Nevertheless, there is a limit when an environment becomes a toxic one. There is a limit when anomalies don’t encourage you anymore, but stifle your potential. It’s the same as with stress levels. A little bit of stress encourages you to act. Too much stress turns you into a passive zombie.

We must also mind the individual differences and preferences. One person might thrive in a certain environment, but another person might suffer in the same environment. There is no ideal environment for everyone.

Life is about diversity and various communities with different sets of values. The values are the ones that determine how well you fit in the environment. And it’s your job to find the environment where you fit in. But we must all respect the differences and strive towards variety.

Here are a few examples of normal differences: Some people love creative freedom and others love order and discipline. Some people love to work in solitude, and others need to socialize a lot. Some people love environments that are more spiritual, others prefer practical ones. And so on. These are all natural and acceptable differences.

How to analyze the environment - Benchmark

But there are general elements that every healthy environment must have. Here they are:

Basic physical and psychological safety and security

There is no healthy environment that doesn’t offer basic physical and psychological safety and security. Feeling safe, not being abused in any sense (physically or emotionally), having access to a healthy diet, normal sleep schedule and decent housing and working environment, these are all the basic elements of a healthy environment and human rights.

Unfortunately, there are many poor countries that still don’t provide these basics today. And even in developed countries, there are many families that are violating these basic rights with toxic behaviors and abuse. It’s almost impossible to live a happy life in such an environment.

We also must not forget about the environment in a narrower sense – having access to clean water, air and exposure to nature. It’s hard to live a happy life if you can’t feel the connection with Mother Nature and it’s hard to operate optimally if your lungs don’t breathe clean air and your body isn’t properly hydrated with clean water.

At this point, I must also mention money. Only having enough money doesn’t automatically lead to happiness. Otherwise every billionaire or movie superstar would be super happy; and you can find many depressed wealthy people and superstars.

But a lack of money and poverty absolutely leads to a lower quality of life. It’s hard to live a quality life if you are living from paycheck to paycheck. That means the ideal environment enables you to live a decent financial and material life. And if you are a minimalist, you don’t need millions for that.

Tolerance leads to empathy, collaboration and love

The second important element of every healthy environment is tolerance. Tolerance encourages everyone to be who they are, as long as they aren’t hurting other people. They can develop their own hobbies, interests and personal style. Tolerance is the essence of collaboration, innovation, empathy and acting out of love for humanity.

All that brings positive vibes in the air. It awakens creative energies and divine humanity traits. Instead of disconnecting, excluding and hating, it leads to connecting, sharing, loving and learning from people who are different. Tolerance also encourages people to innovate and try new things, because the community is tolerant to failures.

People who are not tolerant are afraid. Fear-based environments are rarely happy and healthy. Much like extensive fear does damage to your body, so it does damage to environments.

On the other hand, people who are tolerant trust in themselves and life, and have a loving nature with developed basic goodness and willingness to collaborate. That’s the kind of people you want to be surrounded with.

Transparency that leads to trust, security and fairness

Then we have transparency. Transparency leads to trust, a sense of security, and fairness. A lack of transparency leads to corruption, mistrust, and unfairness. In non-transparent environments, people start to manipulate, shame and guilt trip each other.

People start plotting and gossiping. In a non-transparent system, effort is rarely rewarded and that kills healthy ambitions and motivation.

When an environment is transparent, rules are known, there are no privileged individuals and hidden agendas. It’s a blessing to work in such environments. If you do some research, you can quickly find that more developed and happier countries are more transparent and have less corruption.

The key ingredient of transparency is honest, deep and direct communication (with no hidden agendas). Transparency must always be accompanied with a working legal system.

Encouragement to become the best version of yourself

A healthy environment recognizes your strengths, talents and potential, and encourages you to make the most out of them. The right kind of environment pushes you to become the best version of yourself. It provides a certain level of organization and discipline, but also enough encouragement, mentoring and positive feedback and praise.

The best environments provide the right balance between constantly pushing you out of the comfort zone, and providing enough safety nets when things go wrong.

In that kind of environment, you are exposed to many intellectual conversations, talented people and opportunities. You feel valuable, you are aware of the value you contribute to the society and you love your work at least to a certain extent.

A positive outlook and constant innovation

We must not forget the importance of the environmental outlook. A healthy environment is an environment with a great vision, mission and potential.

It’s an environment that goes forward, an environment that brings hope and clear objectives about where to go. That kind of an environment encourages innovations, improvements and technological advancements.

Technology deserves a special mention at this point. Technology increases productivity, connectedness, mobility, quality of life, access to information and knowledge. That’s why it’s an important part of any healthy environment. Besides law and a high level of awareness, technology plays a key role in the positive development of civilization.

The outlook (vision, mission, potential, trends) is important on the country, municipality and industry level. When you are analyzing an environment, you have to pay attention to all of them. And finally, there is no positive outlook without a stable political, financial and macroeconomic system.

If we summarize all these points, we can say that you should look for an environment that:

    1. Makes you feel safe and supports you at your life goals
    2. Encourages you to make smart life choices and to collaborate with other people
    3. Accelerates your success in a fair and transparent way, and provides safety nets in a case of failure
    4. Gives you a good quality of life with a potential for self-actualization
    5. Lets you be who you want to be, as long as you aren’t hurting others

How to analyze the environment to understand your current position

Now we have all the inputs for analyzing an environment (for yourself or anybody else). We know that there is no single optimal environment for all people, but there are traits that make an environment healthier or more toxic.

There is no perfect environment, but there are environments that are super healthy and environments that have too many disadvantages and thus become toxic.

We know that we must pay special attention to the general culture, people, current situation and trends. And we know that every individual is affected by their home or personal environment and the working or business environment.

Now it’s time to start analyzing based on this framework.

How to analyze the environment - business

    Analyzing the business environment

Let’s start by analyzing the business environment, because it’s a little bit easier than analyzing the personal one, where stronger intimate feelings are always involved (and consequently cognitive biases).

You can also make changes in business life more easily than in private life. And besides that, you can find many resources and pre-made analyses that can help you get the bigger picture in what kind of a position you are in the career or business sense.

To have a complete picture of any business environment, you must do an analysis on three levels. They go from the broader macroeconomic perspective to a more specific microeconomic one:

    1. Country level
    2. Market level
    3. Company level

The first question is where to find the data. It’s easy to find secondary data and different external analyses for countries and markets.

You can check different databases, NGO reports, documents prepared by trade associations, analytic companies, embassies, banks, the World Bank, magazines and universities. Search engines are also your best friends in this regard, just don’t give up too soon.

Where to get the data for the company you work for depends on the type of company – whether the company is trading publicly or not, are financial reports in your country public or not, what is your level of clearance in the company, and so on.

Usually every bigger business has some kind of a competitive analysis or business plan. If not, it’s a good exercise to make your own analysis. In the process, you will learn a lot about your company and get many ideas that you can then pass on to management (and potentially even be promoted or rewarded).

When you know where to get the data, you must know that there are standard analytical approaches or frameworks for how to analyze the state and potential for each of these three levels. I will suggest the best frameworks to use for analyzing your environment and how it influences your life.

The country level – PESTLE analysis

For the country level, the most appropriate analysis is PESTLE analysis and a few country level indexes are also worth considering.

A quality PESTLE analysis will give you a good overview of any country, and indexes provide a good benchmark of your current country with other countries. In the PESTLE analysis, you analyze the following elements:

    • Political: Political system, political stability, infrastructure, tax policy, regulation, funding, grants and initiatives, freedom of press, personal freedom, employment legislation, international trade policies, ease of doing and initiating a business and trade restrictions.
    • Economical: Economic growth, strong industries, interest rates, exchange rates, inflation, economic climate, macroeconomic stability, unemployment rate, national debt, labor costs, seasonal factors, health insurance, social security, stage of business cycle, impact of globalization, economic outlook and likeliness of economic change.
    • Social: Cultural norms, education, religion, demographics, social attitudes, health consciousness, income distribution, media views and freedom, lifestyle, fashion, taboos, mobility, social responsibility, interest and pressure groups, ethnic diversity and social welfare.
    • Technological: Research & development, emerging technology, technology transfer, development of IT and e-commerce, openness to innovation and changes, technology diffusion and disruption and degree of automation.
    • Legal: Law and policies (antitrust, consumer, discrimination, employment, health, safety), bureaucracy, court system, law enforcement, general safety, regulations and standards.
    • Environmental, ethical: Clean air and water, climate change, land use, access to nature, safety, business ethics, attitudes, corruption risks, energy availability, pollution, waste management, carbon footprint, geography and disaster quotient.

I suggest you try to find a few PESTLE analyses for your country somewhere online. Governments, chambers of commerce and other NGOs often make them public. After getting a general overview of your country, there are a few indexes that can help you to benchmark your country with others. Here they are:

    1. World Happiness Report
    2. Human Development Index
    3. Legatum Prosperity Index
    4. OECD Better Life Index
    5. Global Peace Index
    6. Where-to-be-born Index
    7. Forbes – Best countries for business
    8. World Bank Doing Business Ranking
    9. Global Competitiveness Report
    10. List of other rankings

Knowing where your country stands should help you make several general decisions. First, the toughest question – should you change the country or not? Can you live a quality life without migration? Then there is the strategy for how to protect yourself from potential dangers like financial or political instability.

If you understand what is coming sooner or later (like a bubble bursting), you can prepare better. PESTLE analysis can also help you make decisions about where to adapt, where you can contribute to the development of your country, and how to maximize the positives.

The market level – five core questions

There is one very important rule in business: Markets always win. Being on the right market is a blessing, and operating on a market that is small, ultra-competitive and shrinking is extremely hard and painful.

In the long term, choosing the right market is probably the most important career and business decision (because you can always change the company or go work internationally).

On the market level, there are only a few core questions you must answer for yourself with the analysis:

    1. Do you like the industry/market you work for and honestly want to contribute to its growth and development?
    2. Is the market big enough with many opportunities and is it growing (strong growth predictions for the next 10 years)?
    3. Are there any big threats or disadvantages that could have devastating effects on your career (bubble burst, moving factories to countries with cheaper labor force etc.)?
    4. Are you working for a company that is or can become a key player on the market? It can also be your own business.
    5. Do you have competences that are in great demand and rare supply on this market (that’s the only real job safety)?

When you have answers to the five core questions, you can dig deeper. You can compare growth of the industry you work in with other industries (and forecasts for the next five years). You can calculate TAM, SAM, SOM for your company.

It makes sense to further analyze potential threats (jobs moving to another town or country, industry bubble etc.) and opportunities. When you understand the market trends and paradigms, you can absolutely make much better career choices.

The company level – do you fit in

There are many different types of analyses you can perform on the company level. Benchmark analysis, balanced scorecard, heptalysis, MOST, SWOT, Porter’s five forces, nine-box matrix, BCG matrix, core competencies analysis, CATWOE and analyses in the business plan, just to name a few very popular ones.

They are all quite complicated for our needs, so we will simplify things a little bit. On the company level, you are interested in two main things – (1) is the company performing well, meaning growing together with the market or industry. The second important factor are (2) relationships at work.

If we first focus on the position and potential of your company (the one you work for or own), these are the important parts of the company’s operations you should know, understand and compare to competitors and your personal goals and values:

    • Vision and mission – Do you feel the vision and the mission of the company and want to honestly fight for it? Is the vision something that inspires you and thus you love to come to work every day?
    • Strategies, tactics and objectives – Do you agree with strategies and goals of the company in general? The higher the position you have, the more you must understand and be comfortable with the company’s business plan.
    • Market opportunity – Is the company innovating hard enough, seizing all the market opportunities and growing together with the market (at least as fast as the market is growing)? There must be a strong marketing- and sales-oriented culture in the company.
    • Competitive advantage – Does your company have a clear competitive advantage over its competitors? In a sense, every company today must be a tech-oriented company that is constantly innovating.
    • Financial position of the company – Is company in a good financial position? This means it’s profitable, has sound profit margins, doesn’t have too much debt and has many safety nets for troubled times.

These are the five core elements you must be familiar with, wherever you work. Now, if we switch our focus from operations to people, the Gallup group did great research on what makes a great workplace.

They found twelve main factors that contribute to strong company culture and a workplace where people feel great.

These are the important questions to focus on in the analysis when you are studying your business relationships and general company’s culture:

    1. You know what is expected from you at work
    2. You have the material and the equipment to do your work
    3. At work, you have the opportunity to do what you do best every day
    4. In the last 7 days, you have received recognition or praise for doing good work
    5. Your supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about you as a person
    6. There is someone at work who encourages your development
    7. At work, your opinions seem to count
    8. The mission and purpose of your company makes you feel your job is important
    9. Your coworkers are committed to do quality work
    10. You have a best friend at work
    11. In the last six months, someone at work has talked to you about your progress
    12. In the last year, you had opportunities to grow and learn at work

I would add three more things to these twelve factors: (13) Do you respect your boss and can learn from them, (14) is the company culture Kaizen culture that is not corrupt and constantly innovates, and (15) do your personal values match the company values. The last one contributes to a feeling of fitting in, that you are in the right place at the right time.

For the business environment, make sure that you are in the right industry and then in the right company. Alternately, you can open your own company in the right industry.

And if you are living in a not very promising country, you have two options – move out or find a company that does international business. An analysis of your business environment can help you extensively with making these decisions.

How to analyze the environment - home

    Analyzing the home environment

When we analyze the home environment, we are interested in three personal environmental factors.

The first component is (1) analyzing family as an organizational entity, the second is (2) the quality of each personal relationship (with family members and friends), and the third (3) location of your home.

    The quality of individual relationships

Let’s start with the second component. The quality of each relationship is a subjective measure, but you can quickly assess whether a relationship is on the safe, healthy side.

Below are the signs of a healthy relationship, and if a relationship is within these norms most of the time and no abusive behavior is present (physical violence, cheating etc.), these are the kind of relationships you are looking for:

    1. Both people have the center on themselves and only then is a relationship formed
    2. You share similar values and interests, and you create, have fun and experience things together
    3. There is a high level of tolerance, transparency, trust and respect
    4. You listen to one another and show sensitivity to feelings and needs
    5. There are always more dimensions present in a relationship
    6. You encourage each other to constantly improve and achieve personal goals
    7. The investment into the relationship is close to 1:1 from both sides (on average over a longer period of time; fluctuations are natural)
    8. You communicate with active constructive responses 80 % of the time and you communicate a lot about the important things
    9. You hold each other up when tough times come
    10. In intimate relationships, there must be love and sexual attraction

In addition to that, you can assess the intensity, duration and frequency of drama in every relationship. It’s a good sign of how healthy a relationship is. The less drama, the better (as long as a relationship is not completely passive).

And for the intimate relationship (your spouse), there are additional 18 questions that can help you answer if you are with the right person.

Now you should have a good picture of the quality of each relationship in your personal life (mother, father, siblings, spouse, kids, friends, other relationships). If you do the analysis for 10 most important relationships in your life, you will quickly get a picture of which relationships are healthy and which aren’t.

    The general family environment

The second thing we are interested in is the general family environment. Every family functions like an organization with its own culture, values, system etc.

Knowing that, we are especially interested in the following elements of every family environment:

    • Family history and heritage (geographical, ethnical, status etc.)
    • Quality of genes – potential illnesses, physiological traits etc.
    • Core family values
    • Home rules and obligations
    • General climate and outlook towards life in the family (strict, relaxed, formal, informal etc.)
    • Positive and negative behavioral patterns
    • Inclination towards sports, science, creative arts, other hobbies and interests
    • The importance of formal education
    • Family goals and ambitions
    • Financial status of the family and money habits
    • Unwritten rules in the family environment
    • Family religion and traditions
    • Eating habits
    • Other factors

Now, the question is what you can do with all this information. Things with friends are quite easy, you can always terminate relationships with the toxic friends in your life.

With family, things are quite different. You can’t choose your own family (except your spouse, which is a very important decision). Nevertheless, there are several ways how the analysis can help you:

    1. You can better understand yourself by deeply understanding your roots. It’s a way of examining your life and getting to know yourself better. That’s also a way to see your past in a more positive light.
    2. You can consciously decide what kind of a legacy you will hand down to your offspring. In other words, you can decide which family culture elements you will change or improve in your secondary family.
    3. Understanding your family (developing empathy for family members) gives you great insights that can help you maximize the love that you receive and give back to your family. You can develop more empathy for family members, set clearer boundaries and decide with which family members you will develop deeper bonds or create a greater distance (if a relationship is a toxic one).

    The location of your home

The third important part of the home environment analysis is where you choose to live. This includes everything from the general decision on whether you prefer to live in a metropolis, town or countryside, to the specific neighborhood and flat or house you choose.

Where you live has a big impact on your life. The simple rule is to choose a location where you feel good. Your house or flat must feel like home. It must be something you consciously choose.

The important criteria when choosing where to buy your home are:

    • Town infrastructure and transportation options
    • Bureaucracy levels
    • Presence of local communities, meetups for different hobbies and nightlife
    • Exposure to business opportunities (usually collates with town size and development)
    • Access to nature, clean air and water
    • Neighborhood safety
    • Access to formal and informal education
    • The suitability of the town for kids and elderly population
    • General vibe of the town (does it resonate with your personal vibe)

You have to choose which criteria are the most important to you, and then find the best city for your lifestyle. Municipalities invest a lot in promoting their local environments and all the activities they provide.

You can also find many online tests that recommend where would be the best place for you to live by choosing the criteria that matter to you the most. Ask yourself how you would like to design your life, and then assess which locations can support your life design the most.

Make people and trends your allies

The gap and the best way to change your environment

Now you know how to analyze your home and business environment and what to look for in both of them. The better you know yourself, the better you understand what kind of an environment you need to flourish, the better off you will be.

Choosing the right environment is an important part of your life strategy. It absolutely pays off to take a day or two to analyze all the discussed environmental elements and then prepare a plan how you will build yourself a superior environment that will enable you to flourish and thrive. Action is an important part of the analysis.

Thus your concluding thoughts in the analysis should be:

    1. What kind of an environment you are currently in now
    2. What is the best environment for you to operate in (realistically achievable; and mind that your standards can constantly change depending on your life situation, needs etc.)
    3. How big is the gap
    4. How you will get to the desired environment (by implementing changes into your life)
    5. Leave some room for error – what you think you might like and what you actually like can be two different things (so make sure the search mode is a big part of your acting)

The last question is what is the best way to build the right environment for yourself. The answer is one step at the time. Well, I dedicated an entire article to the topic of how to build yourself a motivational environment.

But in summary, start with the elements that you can easily influence – join a new meetup, find a mentor, redecorate your home, find a few new friends, and then build up from there. You should absolutely go for the low-hanging fruit and then scale the changes up.

And when you are improving your environment, you must know that some elements are out of your control. In such cases, your only option is to adapt. Where you are the one in control, change things to the better, where not, adapt.

You adapt by changing yourself, by staying flexible. If you don’t want to lead a revolution, sometimes changing yourself is your best option. But if that isn’t possible, then a revolution might be in order – hopefully for the better.

So for the end, next to every environmental factor in your analysis, mark properly: change, adapt, or disrupt. Enjoy analyzing and building yourself a super supportive environment.

  • Reddit – The list of the best learning and educational subreddits

The list of the best learning and educational subreddits

Reddit is one of the most popular social news aggregators, online community forums and discussion-rating websites. For years, Reddit was one of my main sources for different life hacks and articles on the subjects I’m interested in. Today, I don’t use it regularly anymore. I visit Reddit only approximately once a month to skim the most popular posts and feel the pulse of different communities.

If you wonder why I don’t use Reddit daily anymore, it’s because I’ve unplugged myself from all “fake” reading and learning, where you only skim through dozens or even hundreds of articles and not much knowledge really stays with you. Today I strive to get the most out of my learning time by reading books and through deliberate practice (here you can find a guide on how to learn).

The bottom line is that in most cases, it’s better to read ten pages of a quality book than to skim hundreds of mediocre articles on aggregators. Next to that, there are hundreds of new articles published every day, which can make you very nervous if you are a perfectionist who would like to read everything in your newsfeed.

In spite of that, Reddit is one of the few social networks that has really useful subreddits and can be worth your time, if you know how to use it in a productive way.

    Reddit - Front page layout
    Front page layout

A few words about Reddit and why to use it

If you are new to Reddit, Reddit consists of thousands of communities (subreddits prefixed with /r/) that focus on different topics and interests. Each subreddit has its own moderators and the subpage is designed slightly differently from the others while the general Reddit layout is the same. Anyone can start a new community and that’s why there are so many subreddits (850,000+).

Many subreddits can prove to be:

    • a great community to motivate you,
    • a good place to get an overview of a specific topic,
    • an excellent source of knowledge (but not as good as books),
    • a place to get many ideas quickly,
    • the way to feel the pulse of different communities and what’s new.

People post their thoughts and opinions in a simple text format to selected subreddits or they only post interesting links, and then a discussion evolves. Each item is posted to one subreddit and then gets upvoted or downvoted, and that influences the ranking of the posts.

That means that the community decides what’s important and what isn’t. Posts that get the most upvotes rise to the top of the subreddit. Downvoting and upvoting is what differentiates Reddit from casual forums.

    • Link post: Title with link to a website (article, news etc.)
    • Text post: Title and body of text (there can be links in the text)

You can sort posts by hot, new, rising, controversial or top (day, week, month, year, all time). Each subreddit also has its own admins ([A] next to the username), community rules and often general information about the subreddit in the sidebar.

One more important term you have to understand is Reddit karma. There are two different Reddit karmas – comment karma and post karma. Post karma is the sum of all upvotes (minus downvotes) from the links and text posts you submitted to different subreddits. Comment karma is the same but for comments. So the more active member of the community you are, the more karma you get.

One big downside of Reddit is that the site looks a little bit geeky, with a bunch of links and weird design, so it takes some time to get used to it. Especially when you open the default first page, things can be pretty confusing and nothing seems interesting if you aren’t ultra-geeky.

People on Reddit also tend to be very critical and opinionated. Consequently, you have to be open to different perspectives and accept it when people write a few harsh words on your account.

But trust me, if you create an account, unsubscribe yourself from a few default subreddits and subscribe to a few quality educational subreddits, your first page will become much more interesting and Reddit can become an important app in your infostructure and knowledge source arsenal.

Make sure you don’t start wasting your time on Reddit

Several subreddits, even the popular ones, can be a pure waste of time. I suggest you completely avoid them. The number one rule when it comes to Reddit is: Don’t waste your time on mental masturbation subreddits.

Not even on a single one of them; because you can quickly get drawn into unproductive browsing. The default front page of Reddit (before you unsubscribe from the default subreddits and subscribe only to the ones of your choosing) can become one of them – if you don’t rearrange it correctly.

The front page shows the most popular posts from the subreddits you are subscribed to. So choose the subreddits you subscribe to very carefully and make sure you rearrange the first page (by unsubscribing and subscribing) as soon as you create your account.

There are two general ways how to browse Reddit:

    • Browse the front page, where the most popular posts from all the subreddits you are subscribed to are aggregated
    • Go to a specific subreddit to read more new posts, browse popular past posts or check information in the sidebar

Besides curated knowledge and a strong community, there is one more big benefit of Reddit. Reddit can present a great transitional path from using internet for wasting time (email, news, social networks etc.) to slowly building your attention span by being a part of the community to the point where you can finally start using the Internet for growing and learning.

If you are serious about learning and making the Internet your tool for personal growth, here is how the transition usually looks like:

    1. You use internet only for fun, communication and mental masturbation (outside the working time) – unfortunately that is where most people stay forever.
    2. From time to time, you read an educational post that accidentally pops up in your social networks.
    3. You subscribe to a few interesting blogs or join an interesting subreddit, but you only skim the headlines and then you skim an article or two.
    4. The tipping point: You actually read a whole article or two of them, and think about the ideas in the articles and how to apply them in your everyday life.
    5. You start reading books. It feels weird because there is no scroll-down function or back button.
    6. You realize how much more you are gaining from real reading and learning, and slowly you are leaving all the mental masturbation things behind. You limit the time spent on social networks, online communities and aggregators.

As you can see, Reddit can be a great first step towards nurturing your curiosity and starting with real online learning. That’s why I decided to gather all the best educational subreddits in one place. So you don’t have to search for them and you can immediately subscribe to the ones that interest you the most. These are the subreddits that are worth your attention.

    Life skills and educational subreddits

Educational and life mastery subreddits you have to know

Reddit has more than 850,000 subreddits (many of them are dead or small), 11,500 active communities and 230 million users. For some topics, there are even competing subreddits with many members, and others have small inactive communities.

I tried to list all useful educational subreddits, even if they are small or not very active. They are ranked from subreddits with the most members (approximate number) to the ones with the fewest members (but that doesn’t necessarily mean that bigger is better).

I suggest you check all the different topics you are interested in and then decide which subreddits you will subscribe to. You can subscribe to dozens of them, there are no limits to worry about. And you can always unsubscribe from the subreddits later if you find them boring.

If you don’t have a Reddit account yet, it’s easy to open one. And it takes one click to subscribe or unsubscribe to a subreddit. They also have a great mobile app (iTunes, Google Play) so you can read interesting articles and enjoy the online community life everywhere you go.

If you are looking for additional ideas about which subreddits to subscribe to:

    • Check sidebars of different subreddits – related topics are usually listed
    • Use the search bar in Reddit to find interesting topics
    • Many subreddits are advertised on other subreddits
    • Pay attention to the Subreddit of the day
    • And here is a big directory of subreddits

    And now the main part.

Below is a list of educational and life mastery subreddits worth following. Select the ones that interest you and make sure you follow them. I skipped all the news subreddits or semi-educational ones, and instead focused on the ones that encourage real learning, knowledge sharing and critical thinking on specific topics.

The links in this article lead to subreddits organized by the most upvoted posts of all time, so you can quickly get a glimpse of what kind of content is usually posted in the subreddit.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The links don’t work on mobile phones (because of sorting). Please click the links on a desktop computer. Reddit should fix the bug soon.

Recommended subreddits are sorted into different topics:

    1. General
    2. Learning and skills
    3. Science and academic subjects
    4. Self-improvement
    5. Meditation and religion
    6. Relationships and dating
    7. Fitness, health and food
    8. Support
    9. Books and quotes
    10. Educational videos
    11. Personal finance
    12. Business, entrepreneurship and career

  • Optimizing your working memory is more important than your IQ

Your brain is the most important asset you have in life, especially in today’s creative society. Smart is the new sexy, they say. That’s why you want to get every drop of potential out of your brain. The best way to achieve that is to optimize the use of your limited mental resources.

Unfortunately, you can’t increase your IQ (although there are many different opinions about that), but there are absolutely several ways how you can get to your cognitive and creative maximum and become smarter. And that should be enough, since most people sadly live way below the potential they have.

The first thing you can do to become smarter is to employ the best learning techniques and consequently optimize the use of your long-term memory and crystallized intelligence. The second, equally important, way to get your brain working at full speed is to optimize your working memory.

Improving the strength and speed of your working memory, and properly managing long-term memory are at the end of the day even more important than your IQ. Because your IQ is more or less fixed, but you can definitely better manage these two types of memory.

Don’t worry if you got confused by all the fancy terms. This blog post will explain exactly what they are, why they’re important for your intellectual potential and on top of it all, how you can improve your memory and get the most out of your brain. So let’s start.

    The three types of memory

    Memory types

We know three types of memories – sensory memory, long-term memory, and short-term memory or working memory. Sensory memory is based on your five senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch). It lasts only for a few seconds and you can store around 12 bits of information at once. Sensory memory and short-term memory are connected by attention (here is how to train your attention span).

You concentrate only on a few elements in your environment, and exclude all the other elements. What you pay attention to gets transferred from sensory memory into working memory. You can store around 4 bits of information in the short-term memory (some sources claim 7 +/- 2 bits).

Things from your working memory fade in about 30 – 60 seconds or even less. Thus you have to make a learning effort to transfer things from your working memory into the long-term memory (through revision, repetition and practicing recall). Luckily, your long-term memory is like a big warehouse where you can store almost everything you want if you put the effort in.

To summarize, there are three connected types of memory:

    • Sensory memory: What you pay attention to
    • Working memory: Everything you’re thinking at the moment
    • Long-term memory: Limitless capacity and almost permanent (revision is needed from time to time)

Everything you need to know about the working memory

In a sense, the working memory is everything that you’re thinking of at the moment. You need working memory all the time to operate on a daily basis – for reasoning, learning, and comprehension. It’s similar to computer’s RAM, it only gets tired with time.

Working memory helps you focus your attention, hold relevant information, play with thoughts and ideas, organize and operate with information, solve problems, analyze options (analytical thinking), make decisions, find new patterns (creativity), and so on.

With an un-optimized working memory, you have problems with learning, focusing, understanding, reading, memorizing, organizing yourself, meeting deadlines, not forgetting things, keeping track of things, finding objects, and so on. That’s why it definitely pays off to get the most out of your working memory.

And the good news is that you can train your working memory to become stronger and better.

    Working memeory has downsides

The big downsides of working memory

The working memory is very powerful, but it has several big disadvantages. Here they are:

    1. It takes up a lot of resources
    2. It’s very small
    3. It gets easily distracted or overwhelmed by emotions

The working memory gets exhausted after a while. When you make one difficult decision, your ability to make an optimal second decision is reduced. It’s also easy for your working memory to be in an underperforming state and it can easily focus from one thing to another.

When something emotionally arouses you or distracts you, the information in your working memory is gone. We often call the working memory capacities the mental bandwidth and without enough mental bandwidth, your creative, analytical and learning capacities are greatly reduced.

Getting the most out of your working memory

Since your working memory is so small and easily distracted, you have to learn to manage it properly. That’s where you can optimize your intellectual potential, besides constantly learning new things.

It takes time and effort to boost your working memory, but it’s definitely worth it. Start with the easiest option for you as an individual and then build your working memory power from there. Now lets deep dive in all the techniques that can help you improve your working memory.

    Do not disturb

Getting rid of distractions and avoiding multitasking

The number one killers of your working memory power are distractions. Your working memory gets so easily distracted and that’s a huge issue; because when you’re distracted, all the ideas in your head that you’re working with are erased.

When somebody or something interrupts you, it takes from 15 – 60 minutes for you to get back into the working flow. Sometimes you even can’t get back in the working flow at all. Your working memory capacity is spent on something other than what was planned to achieve. What a waste.

Thus the number one advice for optimizing your working memory is to timebox regular blocks of time without any distractions for work and learning. You want to minimize all the stimuli in the environment and really focus on a single task. That’s how you’ll get the most out of your working memory.

    • Turn off your phone, TV, emails
    • Turn on the website nanny or disconnect yourself from the internet
    • Don’t spend your mental bandwidth for news, gossiping and other mental masturbation
    • Put a “do not disturb” sign on your door
    • Remove anything from your environment that could arouse you (sexy backgrounds etc.)
    • Have as few items as possible in the environment (remove clutter etc.)
    • Don’t multitask but focus on one single task
    • Have no-interruption days
    • Deliberately train your attention span – the connection between sensory memory and working memory (in the world of constant distractions, it gets weird once you find yourself alone in peace in a room)

    Emotions erase working memeory

    Properly managing your emotions

Distractions can be of external or internal nature. Internal distractions are thoughts and feelings that occupy your working memory when you have more important things to do. So the number two killers of your working memory capacity are any severe emotions – positive and negative.

Severe emotional arousal fries your working memory. You become drugged, you see the world in a distorted way and you get completely distracted. You probably know that your working memory simply stops working when you are in love.

    • If there is something disturbing you emotionally, try to solve it as quickly as possible (open a conversation, ask what you are curios about etc.).
    • If it isn’t possible to immediately solve an emotional burden, take a few deep breaths, write it out, go to a gym or try other stress relief techniques
    • Learn how to properly manage emotional flashbacks
    • Sometimes you just have to wait for your emotional body to stabilize
    • Don’t overburden yourself or take too much on yourself. Learn to set limits to your obligations.
    • Properly manage information overload
    • Build yourself safety nets – emergency fund, many friends, insurances etc.
    • Work on your self-confidence
    • Meditate

    Free your working memory

    Free your working memory

You want to free your working memory (mental bandwidth) of trivial things, to have space for real learning and important intellectual operations. You can use to-do lists, reminders and checklists for that. Mark Zuckerberg wears the same design of clothes every day, so as to not use any working memory for those kinds of decisions. He uses all the memory he has to grow his business.

There are many ways how you can easily free your working memory:

    • Don’t think when you don’t have to think
    • Write down things and ideas on to-do lists
    • Do mind maps, prototypes etc. to have ideas out in the physical world and not in your brain
    • Visualize things – a picture is worth a thousand words
    • Always reduce the number of options by eliminating the ones you know you won’t choose
    • Have standard meals so you don’t have to choose what to eat
    • Have standard outfits so you don’t have to think too much about what to wear
    • Have different queues that will unburden you of decisions – movie watch list, reading list, learning list, travel list etc.
    • Properly break down complex tasks
    • Reduce daydreaming if it’s not directed into a creative solution
    • Simplify things and your life in general as much as possible
    • Automate, delegate, delete, reduce, downsize etc.
    • Meditate

Eat that frog – do the tough tasks when you are well-rested

Your working memory gets exhausted with time. That means it makes sense to do the tough challenging tasks while your brain is still fresh. Simply do the most demanding tasks first thing in the morning when you are still well-rested. The concept is also known as eating that frog.

There is a beneficial side effect in this strategy. When you do the toughest task first, every other task starts to seem like a piece of cake. It also makes sense to regularly refresh your working memory by taking regular breaks. Stretch, take a nap, go for a walk.

But even if your working memory does regain some capacity, it’s never as strong as it is when you wake up refreshed after a long quality sleep. So plan your work accordingly. The first workflow in the morning should be for the most demanding tasks and every next one for less demanding ones.

    Never stop learning

The more you know, the more you can get out of your working memory

We know two types of intelligence – fluid and crystallized intelligence. Fluid intelligence is your ability to solve problems, use logic in new situations, and identify patterns.

Your crystallized intelligence is defined by how much you know, by your knowledge and experience. By knowing more, you directly improve your crystalized intelligence, but also indirectly influence your fluid intelligence.

When you bring something from the long-term memory into the working memory (by bringing something to mind), it occupies fewer working memory slots than it did initially when you were trying to memorize it. It gets kind of compact (like zipping a file), and that enables you to play with more ideas at once and connect knowledge in new ways. The more you know, the more creative and smart you can be. Isn’t that really cool?

Smooth physical repetition creates muscle memory, and smooth mental repetition creates knowledge chunks that take up less working memory; you don’t have to relearn or re-explain pieces of information to yourself. You just know it and can intuitively do it; you know it from memory.

    That means you should:

    • Never stop learning, regularly do deliberate practice and focused learning
    • Always try and do new things
    • Learn to play an instrument or start a new hobby
    • Practice learning transfer
    • Regularly brainstorm ideas
    • Play brain games (your IQ probably won’t improve, but you do become better at certain mental tasks and it may prevent cognitive decline when you become older)
    • Interestingly, playing a “dual n-back game” does improve your working memory in the short-term

Take good care of your body

Your brains are an organ that demands a lot of resources. They need your attention and proper care. Brains take approximately 2 % of your body mass and spend 20 % of energy. They need a steady flow of glucose (or ketones – BHBs as an alternative), they need enough oxygen, water and “rest”.

If you want to optimize your working memory, you need all that. You need to take good care of your health.

    • Regularly exercise; especially anaerobic training can have a positive influence on your memory
    • Any hyperactivity or overdoing is hurting your brain and working memory
    • Have several smaller meals with low GI foods (complex carbohydrates or healthy fats)
    • Drink an enormous amount of water (pure water, not sugary juices that mess with insulin levels)
    • Learn to breathe from your belly and take regular walks in the fresh air
    • Eat brain foods – berries, omega 3 fats, nuts, seeds, green veggies etc.
    • Only occasionally help yourself with caffeine or sugar (there are big downsides to this)
    • Meditate – as you can see, meditation can help a lot with optimizing your working memory
    • Get plenty of sleep

In the end, you can also influence your working memory with cognitive-enhancing drugs (Adderall, nootropics etc.) and electrical brain stimulation, but there hasn’t been enough research done to know all the side effects that well. So I would suggest you avoid them.

Let’s not forget about the long-term memory

Much like you can optimize your working memory, so there are a few strategies for optimizing long-term memory performance.

    Long term memory

In general, we divide long-term memory into two big groups: Explicit/declarative, that’s conscious recall, and implicit/nodeclarative, that’s non-conscious recall. Both long-term memories have two subgroups:

    • Explicit (declarative) long-term memory: Things you know you can tell others
      • Semantic: General facts and knowledge
      • Episodic: Personally experienced events
    • Implicit (without conscious recall) long-term memory: Things you know you can show others, doing things
      • Procedural: Motor and cognitive skills, actions (driving a car)
      • Dispositions: Classical and operant conditioning effects (using a word you heard recently, salivating when you see your favorite food etc.)

First of all, only with repetition and recall do you get things from the short-term memory into the long-term memory. If you want to store a knowledge chunk into the long-term memory, you have to deeply process it through focused and meaningful learning and thinking (connecting new chunks with existing ones).

When a knowledge chunk is in the long-term memory, you can recall it when you need it (if you refresh your knowledge often enough). Practice and repetition create a new neural pattern. Well, the basic idea of learning is to get a knowledge chunk into the long-term memory. That means that you can get the most out of your long-term memory only with regular learning and deliberate practice.

The long-term memory works on a “use it or lose it” basis. That means you can optimize your long-term memory especially by:

    • Improving encoding (for example, dual coding – visual + verbal memory)
    • Simplifying patterns
    • Connecting chunks of knowledge
    • Regular review and rehearsal
    • Regularly using knowledge in practice
    • Refreshing knowledge from time to time
    • Teaching others
    • Making things mechanic if possible (like driving)

To get things into your long-term memory, repeat and recall. And to keep things there, use knowledge as often as possible. Regularly using what you know means taking good care of your long-term memory, like a warehouse where all the boxes are in place and nothing gets lost.

    Summary and action steps

We’ve said a lot about memory, so let’s summarize everything that we’ve learned – you know, as the first revision. Optimizing your long-term and short-term memory is extremely important for getting the most out of your brain. Probably even more important than your IQ.

The best thing to do to optimize your crystallized intelligence (and directly long-term memory and indirectly short-term memory) is to employ the best learning techniques:

    • Stick to learning formulas (SQ3R, OK4R, TLR)
    • Build yourself a semantic tree (mind map)
    • Employ the chunking strategy
    • Properly encode knowledge chunks (use more senses, mix learning styles etc.)
    • Interleave practice
    • Do elaborative interrogation
    • Do self-explanation
    • Use mnemonics and analogies
    • Use imagery for text learning
    • Recall, revision, and practice things until challenge turns to boredom
    • Self-test and use flashcards
    • Do proper summaries and notetaking
    • Apply knowledge to practice

There are several other approaches that can help you become smarter:

    • Always stay curious and ask yourself and others “why” a thousand times
    • Regularly brainstorm ideas and play with concepts in ridiculous ways
    • Practice learning transfer
    • Build, prototype and do validated learning
    • Always try new things and do usual things differently
    • Spend as much time as possible with smart people

To optimize your long-term memory explicitly:

    • Improving encoding
    • Simplify patterns wherever possible
    • Connect chunks of knowledge
    • Regular review and rehears things
    • Regularly use knowledge in practice
    • Refresh knowledge from time to time
    • Teach others or blog about things you know
    • Making things mechanic if possible

And for optimizing your working memory:

Happy learning and good luck with getting the most out of your brains.
